Duane Edward Sanders, age 89, of McCallsburg, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on February 4, 2026.
Duane was born on February 17, 1936, in Mallard, Iowa, to Glenn and Verdell (Schwint) Sanders. He was raised in a large and close-knit family of 13 siblings, an upbringing that shaped his lifelong appreciation for family, hard work, and togetherness.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959. Following his military service, Duane built a life rooted in dedication and perseverance. He spent 15 years building car washes and later worked in janitorial services at Marsden, where he was employed for an impressive 29 years, retiring after decades of dependable service.
Duane married the love of his life, Lola Hathaway, and together they shared 57 years of marriage before her passing in 2024. Their life together was marked by devotion, partnership, and the enjoyment of life's simple pleasures.
In his free time, Duane loved camping and boating, working on puzzles, watching television, and recycling scrap metal-always keeping himself busy and finding purpose in staying active.
He is survived by his children, Michael Duane Sanders, Cavin Wesley Sanders, and Donna Jane Sanders; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; as well as multiple siblings and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lola Sanders; his son, Brian Scott Sanders; his daughter, Cindy Kay Bell; his granddaughter, Jennifer Marie Bell Maley; and multiple siblings.
Duane will be remembered for his steady presence, strong work ethic, and deep love for his family, leaving behind a legacy of quiet strength and enduring devotion.
