Dwaine Hiland, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025 at age 96.
Born June 19, 1929 in Hendricks County, IN, Dwaine proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1948 to 1952, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Also serving in the Air Force was his future wife, Geraldine (Jerri) Bennett. The two met and married in 1952 and went on to build a beautiful life together, raising five children.
Dwaine worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller in Cleveland, OH, Butler, MO, Olathe, KS, and Wichita, KS. In 1972, he moved his family to Kansas City and worked as an Airspace Specialist; eventually retiring in 1985. He was very proud of his nearly 40 year career with the FAA.
Dwaine lived a full and adventurous life. He was an avid hunter, woman’s softball coach, passionate motorcycle enthusiast, qualified pilot, and a daring snow skier who excelled at downhill racing. He and Jerri spent many vacations traveling the US, often in their convertible. His motorcycle trips with friends took him to all corners of the country, and nearly every place in between (literally!). He and Jerri spent much time enjoying their property lovingly named Lost Creek. Above all, he was a man who cherished his family, friends and the simple joys of life. His fun-loving spirit, easy-going nature, and the ability to tell a great story, brought warmth and laughter to everyone who knew him.
Dwaine is preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Hiland and daughter, Donna Bray. He is survived by his children, Gary (Angi) Hiland, Linda (Andy) Williams, Susan Hiland and Peggy Hiland.
He will be fondly remembered by his many friends and all whose lives he touched. Dwaine’s legacy is one of love, adventure and kindness. May he rest in peace.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Fairview Christian Church on Monday, August 25th, with visitation from 9:00am to 10:30am, followed by the funeral service, and burial at Terrace Park Cemetery.
