Dwayne D. Cherry, age 65, of Owosso and formerly of Mt. Morris, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022. Funeral service will be held 11AM Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio. Burial in Thetford Township Cemetery. Dwayne was born on August 9, 1957, in Adrian, MI to John D. Cherry and Margaret L. (Roark) Cherry. He graduated from Hill McCloy High School, Montrose, MI in 1975.
In 1976, at 19 years old Dwayne found his professional passion, when he completed police academy and was hired as a Deputy Sheriff for the Genesee County Sheriff's Office. Dwayne was a member of the Sheriff's Office dive team. In 1981, Dwayne became one of the founding Police Officers for the Genesee Township Police Department. He worked undercover narcotics investigations on several assignments during the 1980s and 2000s with Genesee County Area multi-jurisdictional narcotics teams. During his career at Genesee Township, he was promoted to Detective, Lieutenant and ultimately Police Chief, ending his 32-year law enforcement career in 2008. At the time of his retirement, he was one of 13 evidence specialists in Michigan recognized by the International Association of Property & Evidence (IAPE). After retirement he continued teaching crime scenes and evidence & property management to cadets and officers for the Law Enforcement Officers Regional Training Center (LEORTC) and the Law Enforcement Regional Training Academy (LERTA) at Mott Community College in Fenton, MI.
When he was 22 years old, he married the love of his life, Deborah K. Krawiec, on September 1, 1979. Dwayne and Debbie forged a strong marriage throughout Dwayne's life that served as powerful example to their sons of what absolute love of another is.
When his sons were young, he was involved in the Mt. Morris little league association and coached many teams, providing a wonderful example to countless players. Dwayne was an avid golfer, loved camping, history, genealogy, reading and spending time with family. He enjoyed helping and giving to others especially if he was able to do it without them knowing or asking for it.
He leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Debbie, son, Eric and daughter-in-law Emily of Owosso, daughter-in-law Kate of New Jersey and three grandchildren Camden, Kayleigh and Grant. Brother, John (Pam Faris) Cherry of Clio, Sisters, Deb of Burton and Merrie Lynn of Dansville. Many nieces & nephews, brothers & sisters-in-law.
