Dwayne S. DeWitt, affectionately known as "Doc," passed away on January 13, 2025, at Signature Health Care of Bowling Green after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born on September 20, 1958, Dwayne dedicated over 30 years to law enforcement proudly serving in various roles including the Special Operations Group (SOG), SWAT, the Owensboro Police Department (OPD), and as a U.S. Marshal. His commitment to safeguarding his community earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and citizens alike.
Dwayne was a proud graduate of Daviess County Football Alumni, Kentucky Wesleyan College (KWC), and Murray State University. His enthusiasm for sports transcended his educational pursuits; he was an avid sports fan, especially of the Buffalo Bills. His love for athletics also shone through in his role as a soccer coach for 15 years, where he initiated the soccer program in Ohio County in 1999, leaving a lasting legacy in the community.
Beyond his professional life, Dwayne cherished his role as a father and grandfather. He was the quintessential "girl dad," reveling in the joy of spending time with his children and grandchildren. He found immense pleasure in working out, nurturing his garden, and enjoying the outdoors, showcasing a remarkable talent with flowers. Dwayne's favorite saying, "Happy Days," reflected his optimistic spirit and joyous outlook on life.
He is survived by his beloved family, including his sisters Debbie Meyer (Earl) of St. Cloud, Florida, Jackie Kassinger (Glenn) of Owensboro, Kentucky, and DeeAnn DeWitt Ashworth of Hendersonville, North Carolina. He also leaves behind his brother Larry DeWitt (Kim) of Louisville, Kentucky, and his cherished children Danielle DeWitt (Phillip Sinnett), Devin Dame (Donovan),Dustin DeWitt (Brennan), and Dylan DeWitt . Dwayne was particularly proud of his grandchildren, Decker Dame, Delilah Dame, and DeWitt Dame. He is further survived by his lifelong friend of 52 years, Vicki Wallace.
Dwayne is preceded in death by his father Chester DeWitt, mother Eula Mae DeWitt, grandmother Beulah Miller and grandfather Ollie Miller, as well as his paternal grandparents Arch DeWitt and Doss DeWitt.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Dwayne's life will be held on January 18, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Rosehill Cemetery, located at 1300 Old Hartford Rd, Owensboro, KY, 42303.
Dwayne S. DeWitt will be remembered not only for his impressive career in law enforcement but also for his unwavering love and dedication to his family and community. His legacy of kindness, friendship, and strength will inspire those who knew him and will live on in the hearts of many.
