Dwight Stewart Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lewis Funeral Home - Moorestown on Feb. 9, 2026.
Dwight Davis Stewart, Died on February 6, 2026 at the age of 81. Dave was a lifelong Moorestown resident. He was born on May 28, 1944 to the late Dwight and Peggy Stewart.

He was a graduate of Moorestown High School Class of 1962. He went on to attend the University of Delaware, where he proudly lettered in football. Following graduation, Dave began his career in education, teaching Social Studies and coaching football at Newark Senior High School in Newark, Delaware.

In 1969, Dave left teaching to serve his country, spending four years in the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge, he worked for RCA in Moorestown, New Jersey, before beginning what would become his life's work with the Moorestown Recreation Department in 1975. As Recreation Program Coordinator, Dave served the Moorestown community for 33 years, retiring at the age of 62.

Dave loved spending time with his family and treasured the friendships he made through sports and community life. A lifelong athlete, he had a special passion for the game of football. He was also an avid reader, particularly drawn to military history and novels by his favorite authors.

Later in life, Dave enjoyed many meaningful vacations with Benjamin Leadlove, the son of a dear friend, whom Dave always regarded as the son he never had.

Dave considered himself deeply blessed by the people he met throughout his life. He found joy in seeing others happy and truly loved to make people smile and laugh. Though private and guarded with his deeper feelings, he shared his sharp sense of humor and vivid imagination generously with those he trusted.

Dave often said that in life, you only truly answer to two: God, and the face looking back at you in the mirror. If you could honestly say you had done your best for both, there was nothing left to fear. He was also humble enough to admit he did not always succeed - but he never stopped trying. One of his favorite quotes reflected that belief: "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

Above all, Dave felt it was important to pass on two lessons to his nieces and nephews. First, that the greatest human need is the need to feel needed. And second, the message of "Footprints," reminding us that even when we feel most alone, we are never walking without God beside us.

Dave is the brother of Robert J. Stewart, Jonathan B. Stewart and the late Mark D. Stewart. Also survived

by many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

A funeral service will be held on February 26th at 10:30am at St. Matthew Lutheran Church,

318 Chester Ave. Moorestown, NJ.

Private Burial will be in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church-Social Ministry.
