E. Pearl (White) Hurlburt, 96, of Vernon, beloved wife of the late Chester "Chet" A. Hurlburt, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 surrounded by her family.
Pearl is survived by her seven children and their spouses: Clifford and Donna Hurlburt of Ellington, Pamela and the late Gary Stone of Vernon, Stephen "Buzzy" and Tres Hurlburt of Tolland, Mark and Melanie Hurlburt of Ellington, Cheryl Tingley of Vernon, Michael "Buck" and Nancy Hurlburt of Ellington and Beth McKenney of Vernon. Her thirteen loving grandchildren and fifteen special and much-loved great grandchildren will miss her dearly.
Along with raising her family, Pearl was employed for over 35 years with the former Hartmann's Supermarket in Rockville. She began working as a clerk and later earned the responsibility of running the Courtesy Counter. Pearl loved and enjoyed this job because of all the relationships that she created with the community.
Pearl spent many seasons camping with family and friends. Whether at the campground or out in the community, she could often be found collecting her bingo winnings. She had a love for all animals, always known to have dog treats in her pockets and to keep her bird feeders full. Pearl and Chet would spend their winters in Ruskin, Florida with their friends of Hawaiian Isles where she enjoyed riding her three wheel bike. Pearl was proud to be a member of the Hawaiian Isles Drill Team.
Pearl was an extraordinary woman who was loved and cherished. Her personality was warm and inviting, which naturally made people gravitate towards her. Pearl was named after a valuable gemstone which is appropriate as she was a "True Gem" who will be missed by all.
Her family would like to thank the nurses and staff for their outstanding care and compassion that they provided during her time at Vernon Manor. A special thank you is owed to her daughter Pamela for the ongoing devotion, care, and companionship she provided to Pearl over the years.
All are welcome to join her family at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road in Vernon on Monday, September 9, 2024, for calling hours between 10:00 am -12:30 pm with a service to follow at 12:30 pm. Afterwards, her burial will take place at Grove Hill Cemetery in Vernon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an Animal Rescue or Shelter of your choosing. My Condolences to the entire Hurlburt family at this sad time. Our family came to know Mrs. Hurlburt by shopping at Hartmann“s. My parents liked her so well that they would always go through her line every Wednesday. (Double green stamps on Wednesdays ) Then as it turned out my parents, Charlotte and Earl Purington, bought a house on the same street as Chet and Pearl. I became fast friends with their youngest daughter Beth. I think I spent more time at their house than I did at my own. My first trip to the beach was on Memorial Day weekend with Beth, her parents and some of her siblings. I got a terrible sunburn trying to get a tan just like Cheryl. Mrs. Hurlburt kept telling me to cover up but no...at 15 I knew much better than her. I went camping with them, New Hampshire maybe? Beth, Mark and his friend Bob.I can still picture Mrs. Hurlburt wearing a quilted flannel shirt to stay warm. Beth and I got to ride in back of the truck in the slide in camper, how cool was that? Beth got car sick...so Mr. Hurlburt pulled over so she could go sit up front lol.
I remember Mrs. Hurlburt always smiling and taking care of everyone. There was always an endless supply of great snacks (stored in the oven) and envelopes of Lipton Iced Tea ready to be made in a pitcher to take down to the shed, where Beth, the other neighborhood girls and I would play records and talk about what else, boys lol. I had some of the best times of my childhood at the Hurlburt house. Thank you Mrs. Hurlburt for always "hugging" me with your welcoming personality, I will never forget you.
