Funeral services for Mr. Earl Artis, Jr. will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Progressive COGIC, Oberlin, with Pastor Dallas Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Ceaser Cemetery, Duralde, under the direction of Rush Funeral Home, Oakdale.
Mr. Artis, 75, of Oberlin, entered eternal rest on Monday, April 22, 2024, in his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Earl Artis, Jr. was born on June 21, 1948, to the late Earl Artis, Sr. and Olivia Guillory-Artis. He was the first-born son. Earl went to school in Oberlin until he was thirteen years old, and then went to work as a logger with his father. Earl later moved to
Houston, Texas, for over twenty years and worked for Brown and Root and Pepsi-Cola. He decided to move back home after having his twin girls. He then worked for the Town of Oberlin for over eighteen years in the City Maintenance Department. He was also known as the "Mosquito Truck Man" because he would spray the town of Oberlin for mosquitoes at night during the summer months.
"Jr. Boy," as many of us know him, was also known as Scary, Scurmp, Father Herman, Pops, Paw-Paw, Daddy, Uncle, Big Brother, and he would call himself "The Bull!" He loved his western clothes, trail rides, horses, zydeco music, having parties, and bragging on his beautiful girls. He often bragged on having eleven children and was proud that everyone looked like him. He only had one son, and he said he nicknamed him "Lil Kat" because he reminded him of his father so much. The day before he passed, he bragged about how he was so proud to have Brian as his son and his grandson Pichou' (Kendrick) look and act like him. He said, "I know if I didn't do anything else right, I trained them two to be just like me." He said he was working on Keyon next! He loved his chihuahua, Babygirl, she was his comfort and Roshanda's emotional support dog. He loved joking, fighting, talking about Ro, eating chocolate, drinking milkshakes, listening to music, singing, and watching Tik Tok videos. He also enjoyed watching monkey videos, dog shows, wrestling, and westerns. He never met a stranger, never let anything bother him, loved everyone, and enjoyed his life.
Earl was proceeded in death by his parents, Earl Artis, Sr. and Olivia Guillory-Artis; his paternal grandparents, Pete A. Artis and Docelia Pierre-August; his maternal grandparents, Armogene Guillory and Marlene Sonnier; one brother, Russell Artis; one grandson, Christopher Manuel; one granddaughter, Dyani Allison; two great-grandsons, Braylon Young and Bryson Young; one brother-in-law, Willie Guillory; one nephew, Willie Guillory, Jr.; numerous aunts and uncles; and his Godparents, Amos and Marceline Miles.
