Eddie "Ed" Hughes, 82, of Marshalltown, IA died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines on November 6, 2022 surrounded by his loving children. Per Ed's wishes, there will be no services. He wanted a celebration of life or a "big party" which will be at a later date. Anderson Funeral Homes of Marshalltown has been entrusted with the arrangements. Ed was born on December 26, 1939 to Edmond & Clara (Schrafel) Hughes in Iowa City. He lived most of his childhood around Conrad, IA and graduated from Conrad High School. He went on to play football at Parson's College in Fairfield, IA. He married Joyce Kell on July 3, 1958 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They made their home in Marshalltown where they raised their five children. Ed was a successful businessman, as well as a generous man, always ready to offer help or advice to anyone who asked or needed it. He was always involved with sports either as a participant or as a coach. He coached many youth in the area for many years in a variety of sports. Ed always looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Canada with his sons and grandson. He also enjoyed his time spent in Mazatlan, Mexico each year. He cherished his lake time with his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to him. There was never a dull moment with Grandpa around as he liked joking around with them and telling his many stories. He will be truly missed by so many.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Joyce, of 64 years, along with his children; Jeff (Jana) Hughes, Molly (Art) Hanford, Scott Hughes, Brad Hughes, and Craig (Andi) Hughes. His grandchildren; Claire and Ellie Hughes, Tyler (Kelley) Olson, Shelby (Jens) Berggren, Nicole (Rafa) Cruz, Jayden and Kylie Hughes. His six great-grandchildren; Kennedy, Leona, Cecilia, Rory, Leighton and London. His sisters; Shirley Warnell, Margie McBroom and Connie (Roy) Watson, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Charles, his mother and father in law, Orville and Ethel Kell, two sister in laws, Jean Ewoldt and Joan Whitaker, three brother in laws, Jay Kell, Roger Warnell, and Paul McBroom.
