Obituary

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) - Eddy Arnold, whose mellow baritone on songs like "Make the World Go Away" made him one of the most successful country singers in history, died Thursday morning, days short of his 90th birthday.

Arnold died at a care facility near Nashville, said Don Cusic, a professor at Belmont University and author of the biography "Eddy Arnold: I'll Hold You in My Heart." His wife of 66 years, Sally, had died in March, and in the same month, Arnold fell outside his home, injuring his hip.

Arnold's vocals on songs like the 1965 "Make the World Go Away," one of his many No. 1 country hits and a top 10 hit on the pop charts, made him one of the most successful country singers in history.

Folksy yet sophisticated, he became a pioneer of "The Nashville Sound," also called "countrypolitan," a mixture of country and pop styles. His crossover success paved the way for later singers such as Kenny Rogers.

"I sing a little country, I sing a little pop and I sing a little folk, and it all goes together," he said in 1970.

He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966. The following year he was the first person to receive the entertainer of the year award from the Country Music Association.

The reference book "Top Country Singles 1944-1993,"' by Joel Whitburn, ranked Arnold the No. 1 country singer in terms of overall success on the Billboard country charts. It lists his first No. 1 hit as "It's a Sin," 1947, and for the following year ranks his "Bouquet of Roses" as the biggest hit of the entire year.

Other hits included "Cattle Call," "The Last Word in Lonesome Is Me," "Anytime," "Bouquet of Roses," "What's He Doing in My World?" "I Want to Go With You," "Somebody Like Me," "Lonely Again" and "Turn the World Around."

Most of his hits were done in association with famed guitarist Chet Atkins, the producer on most of the recording sessions.

The late Dinah Shore once described his voice as like "warm butter and syrup being poured over wonderful buttermilk pancakes."

Reflecting on his career, he said he never copied anyone.

"I really had an idea about how I wanted to sing from the very beginning," he said.

He revitalized his career in the 1960s by adding strings, a controversial move for a country artist back then.

"I got to thinking, if I just took the same kind of songs I'd been singing and added violins to them, I'd have a new sound. They cussed me, but the disc jockeys grabbed it. ... The artists began to say, 'Aww, he's left us.' Then within a year, they were doing it!"

Arnold was born May 15, 1918, on a farm near Henderson, Tennessee, the son of a sharecropper. He sang on radio stations in Jackson, Tennessee, Memphis, Tennessee, and St. Louis before becoming nationally known.

Early in his career, his manager was Col. Tom Parker, who later became Elvis Presley's manager.

His image was always that of a modest, clean-cut country boy.

"You cannot satisfy all the people," he once said. "They have an image of me. . . I want people to get this hero thing off their mind and just let me be me."

Survivors include a son and daughter.

My Father was a USAF Colonel. He loved Eddy as I did in all the years since I first heard him at the age of 11. I saw him in concert on multiple occasions and purchased the records from the late 1960s to the very last album. Dad and Eddy lived to be the same age. They both passed away in May, one year apart.

We lived out in the country so we use to listen to his music. I just found one of my favorite alumbs of his and when I played it, it brought back memories. No one has his tone. He was and is the best. How great they were married for so long. They are in heaven together. Rest in peace knowing you bought so much love in this world.

My mother,Lessie Pearl Hart, went to school with Eddie Arnold and sing in the church choir with him. When Eddie went to Lake Tahoe to perform my mom and dad and
myself went to see him several
times.They were life long friends.
My mother will be 96 in April and it doesn't appear she will make it to her 96th birthday as she is dying of congestive heart failure.
We cherished our time with him as he would tell the press "Go away I am talking to my childhood schoolmate
and country friends".
My mother told me the name of the school they went to but
I told him, I thought she was pulling my leg.Eddie said oh! The old Possum Trot School that was the name.DUH....

I loved Eddy Arnold`s singing & so did my Ma. My Dad was born & raised outside of Trezevant. Tennessee near Hollyleaf. There is a road just West of there a piece named "Eddy Arnold". Figured it was named for his family way back when, as were other Roads named after the family who lived on it. My Dad, Wilbur Raymond Long, his Mom, my GrandMom was Flossie L Crocker & my Grandpa was Floyd F Long. My Mom, Genevieve E Grahll Long & my Dad both passed in 2013, my Mom on 03 March & my Dad 20 June. It seems Love is so strong, like the Arnold`s & couldn`t go on without....I love Trezevant, Tennessee & am & will remain a Tennesseean into Eternity. My Mom & I both had Eddy`s Greatest Hits Album, which I sometimes sing when I am out walking in the Woods....Oh yeah, my Mom said she thought Eddy Arnold looked like the Longs & he sure did! There are certain singer artists whose voices remain Timeless & this one certainly is....

I hope this will help.

Hello I am trying to find someone that might know something about an old guitar that has the name Eddie Arnold etched into the pickguard(looks like one of those small etching pens was used). The guitar is a Vox, acoustic. probably about 1960. The guitar came in a case signed by someone named L.z.Short. I love this guitar, and like to think it might have once belonged to the late singer. I apologize for using this site for this, but thought someone may know something about it. The etching looks exactly like pictures of his signature I have seen online. any help would be appreciated. Thank you, again. p.s. Cattle Call, best country song ever.

My cousin Ronnie said they talked for over thirty minutes on mainly grand children! Ronnie, said he was the nicest, most down too earth person he had met! A superstar in music and tv., but also a superstar as a great, kind, and generous human being!

For Eddy...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I loved listening to his many songs. I loved his soft & intense voice. He was quite a handsome man, too.
I don't remember hearing bad things about him. He kept his private life-very private,
The song ,"Make The World Go Away" touched my heart at a very young age. The words calmed me & gave me ideas of writing my words in a poetry compostion style.
May his family have peace & confort as they endure his missing presence.
The music industry people, & his many fans, will miss him a lot. I will miss listening to his mellow voice. I shall look into buying his albums/songs.

Resurrection Promise

Do not cry as your loved ones pass,

God has promised it will not last,

The time is coming with all things new,

And your loved ones brought back to you,

Revelation 21: verses three and four,

States that death and sorrow will be no more,

Remember Jesus said his friend was asleep,

We will be called back to be his sheep,

Yes it hurts to lose someone,

But soon every bad thing will be undone,

Trust in Jehovah with all your heart,

He’s been with us from the start,

So as we go on in this old life,

Remember he will rid us of this pain and strife,

Take his hand and see his power,

When he brings his judgment hour,

Those in the memorials tombs will come out,

We will all be happy and able to shout,

Look what God has went and done,

He's brought back Mothers, Fathers, Daughters and Sons.
