Edgar Husted Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
Ed Husted, born on September 28, 1937, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, passed away after a long battle with cancer on July 20, 2025, at the age of 87. Ed was born to Meredith and Selwyn Husted and named after his maternal grandfather, Edgar Rice, who was judge of the local circuit court from 1928 until his death in 1944. Ed grew up in Crawfordsville and graduated from Crawfordsville High School in May 1955.
Ed attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he received a B.A. degree with a major in geology. In June 1960, he married Margaret Kessell. Two children were born to the couple, Eric and Jonine.
Ed graduated from Indiana University Law School in May 1962. After passing the Indiana bar exam, he worked as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of Indiana. In 1964, he returned to his hometown to practice law with his father.
After the death of his father and a divorce, Ed moved to Alaska where he met Mary Klink in 1983. They were married in Fairbanks on July 12, 1985. Ed and Mary worked together for the Chancy Croft Law Office in Fairbanks until 1988, and then as owners of Lawyer Support Services and LSS Court Reporting until they retired in 2015.
In 1992, the UAF paralegal program was created and Ed, who had been a leader in its development, became its first program coordinator. In 2001, the program was approved by the American Bar Association, a status it has retained ever since. Ed retired as head of the program in May 2015, and was awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus. He continued to teach paralegal courses online until the fall of 2023.
Ed served for 17 years on the Fairbanks Concert Association Board of Directors. He was also organist at Sacred Heart Cathedral from 1982 to 2003, and at Christ Lutheran Church from 2003 until he retired in April 2024. He played piano at St. Raphael Catholic Church for the Saturday evening mass from 2003 to 2015.
Ed is survived by his wife, Mary; his two children, Eric Husted of Bayfield, Colorado, and Jonine Husted of Oak Grove, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Jessica, Travis, Kyla, Alexa, and Tor; and two great grandchildren, Carly and Rowan; and by his brother, John Husted, of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
There are no words that can express how thankful we are to the friends and neighbors who have provided support and love during the last four years, which allowed Ed and Mary to stay in Fairbanks, a place they loved. A memorial service is planned for August 30.
