John Husted Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hunt & Son Funeral Home - Crawfordsville on Aug. 27, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Dr. John Husted, born on September 18th, 1942, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, passed away on August 26th, 2025, at the age of 82 following a long battle with dementia. John was born to Selwyn Frank and Meredith Lucille (Rice) Husted and graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1960. John attended Grinnell College, earning his bachelor's degree with a major in psychology. He continued his graduate studies at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, before completing his doctorate at Saint Louis University in 1968.

John devoted more than forty years to his work as a psychologist before retiring in 2012. For three decades, he also shared his passion for teaching as a professor at the University of Minnesota Morris, retiring in 2007. Among his many professional honors, he was especially proud to receive the 2003 Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Minnesota College of Continuing Education.

John's work also brought him to the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate in northeastern South Dakota, where he treasured his time working alongside tribal members. Being made an honorary member of the Oyate was one of the greatest honors of his life.

Lives were forever changed because of John's dedication to his work. He was a champion for the underdog and found his deepest joy in helping his patients and students.

John was a lifelong runner who completed several marathons and could regularly be found out on the road no matter the weather. He loved listening to classical music, watching movies with subtitles – often to the chagrin of his family – as well as reading nonfiction US history books and traveling to Civil War battlefields with his sons. John never missed a chance to cheer, often loudly, for his beloved Indiana Hoosiers and Minnesota Twins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Edgar Husted of Fairbanks, Alaska; his best friend, Phil Starnes of Crawfordsville, Indiana; and by the many beloved dogs who were always part of his life.

He is survived by his children: Justine (Todd Scheriger) of Hendersonville, Tennessee; Jed (Preston) Richardson of Mill Valley, California; Kathleen (Peter Kuhnly) of St. Michael, Minnesota; Indiana Husted (Colin Brownlee) of Milnor, North Dakota; and Samuel (Morgan) Husted of Bowling Green, Kentucky. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Michael (MK), Paige (Ben), Will, Ben, Clare, Samuel, Emmett, Carter, Eleanor, and Archie; and by great-grandchildren Maeve and a baby girl expected in November. He is also survived by his former wives, Wendy Weiss of Willmar, Minnesota, and Sheila Richardson of Hendersonville, Tennessee.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 2nd, from 12-2pm at Hunt and Son Funeral Home in Crawfordsville, Indiana, followed by a graveside service at Oak Hill Cemetery North.
