Edgar Allen Mitchell, born on July 24, 1929, in Auxier, Kentucky, was called to his eternal home on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. He was the beloved son of the late Ezra and Lavone (Elliott) Mitchell. Affectionately known as "Mitch" to his friends and "Ed" to his family, he was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on this earth was marked by love, kindness, friendship, humor, storytelling, and an unwavering faith in God. Edgar spent his early years working on the family farm in Kentucky before the family moved to Detroit, where he began his career as a driver and salesman for Nabisco. At 20 years old, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. With valor, Ed served as a gunner during the Korean Conflict, earning both the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal with two bronze stars. After returning home from Korea, he rejoined Nabisco, from where he later retired. He and his wife, Bobbie, then relocated to the Chicago suburbs, where they lived for more than 30-years. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing pool and cards, traveling, and building friendships. After Bobbie's passing in 2022, Ed moved back to Michigan to be near his family. In recent years, he spent his days storytelling, enjoying time on the lake, watching cowboy movies, snacking, scratching lottery tickets, and sharing the importance of having a deep-rooted faith in Jesus. He was a proud and longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the Wayne Masonic Lodge. Ed is survived by a host of nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces, sister-in-law Ann Vario, brother-in-law Greg (Mary) Ferrell, as well as many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of more than 40 years, Bobbie Jean; siblings Clara (Kyle) Wilson, George (Evelyn) Mitchell, Marlene (Eddie) Buttigieg, Sue (Leonard) Kielan, Jan (Frank) Labut, Don (Joann) Mitchell, and Robert Mitchell; and in-laws Robert and Elizabeth Ann Ferrell, and Brenda Sue Ferrell. Although his physical presence may no longer grace our lives, memories of him will continue to inspire and his light will forever shine brightly in our hearts. Ed will be laid to rest following a Committal Service and Military Honors on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI. Tributes may be shared at: Edgar A. Mitchell's memorial page – Honor Veterans Legacies at VLM.
