Edie Winkelman Obituary

Edris "Edie" Ann Jones Winkelman, age 90, of Holladay, Utah, returned peacefully to her eternal home on September 13, 2025.

Born September 15, 1934, in a log cabin near Beaver, Utah, to Josiah and Edris Mary Jones, Edie entered the world weighing only three pounds. Her parents kept her warm in a shoebox by the potbelly stove, not knowing they were nurturing a spark of resilience that would carry her through a remarkable life. Though always petite, Edie embodied the strength, warmth, and steady flame of that fire-her light and comfort touched all who knew her.

During her childhood, the family relocated to Southern California, where Edie excelled in nearly everything she tried. She won the State High School Tennis Doubles Championship and earned a full academic scholarship to college. At Brigham Young University she met her prince charming, Walter Winkelman, a fellow devoted Cougar. They were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on January 18, 1957 and together built a family and a legacy of love.

Edie and Walt had four children-Ardy, Paul, Dave, and Terri-though, really, Edie raised an entire village. Nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless neighbors found in her a listening ear, wise counsel, unconditional love, and enjoyed more meals than her family could have eaten in ten lifetimes. To Edie, no one was a stranger: her coworkers and the teachers she worked alongside for 25 years at Jordan Education Association, the grocery store clerk, the postman, and the nurses who helped her care for Walt in his final years all became her friends.

Her compassion extended to every creature in need. She set out pools of water for ducks, rescued stray dogs from busy highways, and cherished Murphy, her neighbor's dog, as if he were her own. Whether you visited her kitchen or her porch, you never left without a hug-and usually a cookie or a milk bone.

Edie's life was defined by her devotion to Jesus Christ. She lived her faith with quiet steadiness and unwavering conviction, serving in many callings in the LDS church, her community, and especially within her family. Her greatest acts of love were caring for her own mother until she took her last breath and the nine years she dedicated to caring for her beloved Walt with tenderness and grace. She met every trial with courage, never wavering in her love, service, or testimony. She was an angel and an example to all who knew her.

Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, Edie's spirit will continue to inspire and uplift. Her memory will remain a blessing, and her legacy of love and compassion will endure for generations.

Edie was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Winkelman; her parents; her brothers David, Bill, and Richard; and her sisters Ada and Relia Beth. She is survived by her children: Ardy Vallett (Dave), Paul Winkelman, David (Alice) Winkelman, and Terri Winkelman; nine grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; her sister Emma Jones; and many nieces, nephews, and fur babies who adored her.

Her family and friends will forever cherish her light, her love, and the countless ways she made the world a kinder place.

We would like to thank Aspire Home Health and Hospice for the loving care they helped give to our precious mom. Especially Diana and Aman.
