On Tuesday morning, January 10, 2023, God in His infinite wisdom, called our dear and loved one, Edith Vinetta McRae, home to a beautiful and eternal peace in heaven. "Vye", as she was affectionately called, was born in Newport News, Virginia on March 24,1949 to the late George Garfield and Edith Hopson McRae.
Vye received her early childhood education from the Newport News public schools. She attended Booker T. Elementary School, and she was a proud member of the l967 class of Huntington High School (HHS). Vye loved being a Mighty Viking! While at HHS, she was a member of the illustrious majorettes and the Charles R. Drew Chapter of the Future Teachers of America. Vye went on to pursue her undergraduate degree from Hampton Institute (University) and her graduate degree in Social Work from the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond.
Vye's passion was helping others in any way that she could; she was a Bible scholar who loved to teach and spread God's Holy Word. She first worked in the Newport News Department of Social Services before relocating to Maryland. While in Maryland, Vye worked at Howard University in Washington, DC as a dormitory director. In this position, Vye had the awesome responsibility and opportunity to interact, lead, and counsel college students throughout the day. Students loved Ms McRae; she was proud that some of them kept in touch with her for many years after their graduation. She lived her life in such a manner that students and others could see God's love, grace, and mercy reflected throughout her actions.
While growing up in Newport News, Vye's parents instilled in her a strong spiritual foundation which followed her throughout life. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, East End where she served in several ministries. When she moved to Maryland, Vye became an active member of Ebenezer AME Church in Fort Washington.
Spending time with her family was an immeasurable joy for Vye. She loved Christmas dinners with family in Poquoson and summer trips to New York. Vye enjoyed going to different locations for family reunions and on many road trips.
Yes!!!! We will miss Vye, but we will never forget her. Maya Angelou once said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel" and Vye was notorious for always making you feel special.
Khalil Gibran in his book, "The Prophet", states eloquently that "When you part from your friend, you grieve not, for that which you love most in her may be clearer in her absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain".
Vye, you fought the good fight, you finished the race, and you kept the faith.
Edith Vinetta McRae will be greatly missed and forever fondly remembered by family and numerous life-long friends.
A graveside service will be held 12 Noon, Friday January 20, 2023 at Hampton Memorial Gardens.

To Vinetta's family and friends:

Vinetta was a high school homeroom classmate who for a long period was one of my several very best female friends. She was someone very well-versed in almost everything and a fierce defender of very close friends and people she admired. While she had extensive formal education beyond high school, I believe her time at Huntington High School was her most cherished and memorable educational experience.

I lost touch with Vinetta over the last few years, but that absence did not diminish the very strong friendship we had over many decades and through the date when she left us.

May peace be with her.
