Edith "Edie" Lea Ommerman, 79, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on May 28, 2024, in Shawnee, KS.
Edie was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Sidney and Ruth Koffler on January 17, 1945. She went to high school at Southwest High School and graduated in 1963. She went on to earn a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Special Education from the University of Missouri and then the University of Illinois. She worked as a special education teacher for almost 30 years, approximately 20 of them in the Kansas City Missouri School District. She loved animals, was involved in a local pet adoption organization for years, and always had pets of her own.
Edie is survived by her daughter, Rachel Ommerman (Joshua Tucker) and grandchildren Samuel and Lilith Tucker, in Shawnee, KS, and her son Ron Ommerman (Christine Ommerman) and grandchildren Ezra and Vivian Ommerman, in Seattle, Washington. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law Marty and Barbara Baumgarten and Richard and Felice Baumgarten, and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Sidney and Ruth Koffler.
Funeral service will be held at Chernikoff-Doliginow Chapel at Kehilath Israel Blue Ridge Cemetery, 1901 Blue Ridge Blvd., Independence, MO 64052 on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. with Rabbis Mandl and Grussgott of Kehilath Israel Synagogue officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Cemetery. Louis Memorial Chapel will be handling the funeral arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to any animal protection/rights agency of your choice.
Edith Ommerman was difficult to get close to, but most who knew her appreciated her sense of humor and her closest friends knew she was loyal and thoughtful. Her children were surrounded by her love and she will be missed.
