Thoughts on my friend Eddie Podbielski
I was a college student when I met my friend Eddie in 1983 when he opened his Hair Salon business "Hair on Broadway" and I went to have a haircut - a $15.00 student special. We became friends immediately, which lasted 40 plus years.
I enjoyed going to the salon, having either a cuppa coffee or a glass of wine with a biscotti, listening to music of so many genres, and having great conversations about family, music and life.
Having a haircut throughout the 40 years was not just an appointment, it was an opportunity to visit a friend and catch up. I will really miss that.
Eddie was an artist, a technician, a connoisseur of hair who would attend and give clinics and seminars on hair styling. In the 1980s, Hair on Broadway was the site of the second British invasion with stylist from Britain brought over by Eddie to create fashion from his salon chairs.
Eddie had many passions, with music at the forefront. He even took his diverse collection of music and became a Disc Jockey. I would sit and hear incredible stories of so many musical artists that he had befriended and concerts that he had attended at arenas, concert halls, outdoor venues, and small playhouses. Numerous musical artists passing through the musical hub of New Haven playing at Toad´s Place or The New Haven Coliseum whether it be old faithful Tower of Power or so many other greats, would find themselves at Eddie´s Hair on Broadway for the best after hours gatherings.
Eddie loved his family. We would exchange stories and show pictures of our families and children from school-age to adulthood, from sports (wrestling) to their careers (nursing) and so much more. I would always ask Eddie to take a picture of me getting my hair done while having a cup of coffee and a biscotti so I could show to my family and friends.
Yes, Eddie knew every hair on my head and how to cut and comb each strand, but we also knew so much about each other´s lives. I knew to TALK LOUDER on the side that he had poor hearing.
As I moved further away from New Haven and Eddie relocated several times from Hair On Broadway (actually on Broadway), to Hair Off Broadway (actually not on Broadway), to his brother´s place in Branford, to Panache in New Haven and eventually to his final Hair On Broadway in Hamden, I would travel over an hour sometimes longer in traffic to get a haircut from Eddie ... and I was often late receiving a call or a text "Where are you?". I would joke that if I went anywhere else, I felt like I was cheating on him. LOL. There was a period several decades ago when I couldn´t locate Ed for several months. So, there I was, a man in his 40´s, with hair down to his shoulders. I wouldn´t go anyplace else to have my hair cut.
As we aged, we shared medical and health experiences, including my near-death experience with pulmonary embolisms. When Eddie told me he had Multiple Myeloma Cancer, I joked "who is going to let me know if you pass away?" and, importantly, "who´s going to cut my hair?". We both chuckled and never came up with the answers.
The last time I saw Eddie, he put on a brave face. He was still Eddie, and we enjoyed our time chatting as we had countless times over the past 40 years, but I left thinking and wondering. In fact, after leaving and going to my car, I went back into the salon just to tell him something. I really had nothing to say although I felt like I had everything to say. I just had a feeling.
A couple weeks before his passing, we were talking about getting together but he said, "not yet, not yet". Then there was that period of time when I reached out "Eddie, how are you? ... and a couple days later, "Eddie, how are you? ... and again, "Eddie, how are you?" ... My friend Eddie did not respond.
As I write these words, or actually, as I write these feelings, I find myself saying, "A grown man is not supposed to cry while reminiscing about someone that cuts his hair."
Well ... Eddie was more than that. Eddie was my friend, and he will forever be in my heart.

Eddie, We have great memories of you and all the good times we had years ago. You had a hair place in New Haven on Broadway. That is where Hair on Broadway came about. We are so sad to hear of your passing. Rest in peace my friend. You will forever be remembered.
