Born in Fargo, North Dakota, Allen was the son of the late Rolland L. and Emma Alice Wood Whedon. He spent his early years in Fargo before relocating with his family to Spokane, Washington. There he began his studies at Gonzaga University and participated in the Army ROTC program.
Allen served with distinction in both the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps. His military career spanned several theaters of conflict, including Korea, China, and Lebanon. He was awarded three Purple Hearts for wounds sustained in combat. Known for his exceptional photographic memory, he played a critical role in reconnaissance missions. His dedication to service extended beyond active duty; he later served in the reserves of both the United States and Israel and was a rated flying officer with both the U.S. Marine Corps and the Israeli Air Force.
Following his military service, Allen settled in California and embarked on an extraordinary civilian career that took him across the globe. He began with RCA near the North Pole and later worked in France with GE Bull for Electricité de France's nuclear power division. His professional journey continued with Hughes Aircraft Company, where he made significant contributions to advancements in semiconductor technology, satellite systems, and avionics.
Allen's intellectual gifts were evident from an early age. Blessed with a photographic memory, he absorbed vast amounts of knowledge through reading and experience long before attending university. Remarkably, he performed at a professional level in nuclear physics at GE prior to undertaking formal university studies.
He completed his academic education at California State University Northridge, University of California Riverside, and University of California Los Angeles. These achievements further solidified his expertise as he advanced into roles of increasing responsibility within the scientific and technological communities.
In retirement, Allen turned to writing and authored three books- "Beyond," "Megaverse Musings," and "Atlantians"-which explored themes in astrophysics and archaeology. He also dedicated time to substitute teaching, sharing his knowledge and passion for science with younger generations.
He is survived by his fiancé, Gloria Kennedy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his siblings, Retired Major David R. Whedon of Cochran and Elizabeth Ann McCraw-Lewis of Midwest City, Oklahoma; his children, Curtis Fluent of Hemet, California; Eric Whedon of Dublin, California; Ron (Jetuan) Whedon of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and Karen Gibson of Gardena, California; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dr. Edmund Allen Whedon lived through eras marked by profound global change-from economic hardship to technological triumphs-and met each chapter with resilience, intellect, and purpose. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to those who learn of his legacy.
