Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cyril Funeral Home on Jun. 24, 2024.
Edna Lee was born in Fittstown, OK on July 20, 1939, to John Crowder and Nora Lee Duncan Crowder. She passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024, in
Lubbock, Texas at the age of 84.
Edna's family moved quite a bit in her youth, as her father was establishing telephone service to many small towns in Oklahoma. While attending high school in Elmore City, she met the love of her life, Freddie Hicks, and the couple was married on October 13, 1955. The couple made their first home in Elmore City where Freddie went to work for Edna's father in the telephone business. To this union three children were born, Julia Ann, Marcia Kay, and Freddie L. Jr.
Eventually, the family moved to Gracemont, Oklahoma to upgrade the telephone system there. Edna highly valued education and decided to pursue a teaching degree from the Oklahoma College for Women. The college transitioned to the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in Chickasha, OK, where Edna graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969.
The phone office in Gracemont was sold to Continental Telephone Company and the family moved to Cyril where Edna was employed as the high school math teacher for many years. She was a wonderful teacher and made a great impact on many of her students because she truly cared about each and every one. She loved spending time with her students and especially loved the academic teams she sponsored. She was a lifelong learner and encouraged everyone to learn as much as they could. Edna had a teacher's heart and, even after retirement from Cyril, she chose to return to teaching and taught many more students at various schools. She even taught a quilting class for anyone interested in quilting.
She was very talented in multiple areas including sewing, cooking, and even woodworking. She was an avid reader and had many adventures through her books. Her Kindle was her constant companion everywhere she went.
Edna was a Christian and worshipped at the Cyril Church of Christ until her health prevented her from attending in person. She then tuned in online or on TV to different Church of Christ broadcasts.
She was the perfect example of what a kind and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, or Mema as she was known, should be. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her, but we will do our best to continue her legacy of love and kindness that she leaves behind.
The family will receive visitors at Cyril Funeral Home from 5:00-8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, June 26. A funeral service is planned for 10:00 A.M., Thursday, June 27, at Cyril Church of Christ with Douglas Graham officiating. Interment will follow in the Cement Cemetery under the direction of Cyril Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers are Nathan Harmon, Jackson Harmon, Dustin Chrismon, Sebastian Chrismon, Cole Chrismon, and Matt Sanders. Honorary pallbearers are Renée Jimenez, Adam Ryburn, Mark Sanders, and Alden Cogburn.
