Williamsburg-Edna May Sandberg was born October 29, 1935, in Warroad, Minnesota, the daughter of John Valentine and Ellen Mable (Hams) Mattson. She grew up in Northern Minnesota. She graduated from Warroad High School in 1953 and attended Tulsa Business College.  Edna was united in marriage to Lowell Dean Sandberg on July 19, 1955, in Des Moines. She has lived in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Amana before residing in Williamsburg in 1971.  She has worked a number of secretary and clerical jobs, last being a Data Processing Supervisor for the Amana Society for 28 years retiring in 2000.  Edna enjoyed nature, gardening, reading and doing volunteer work at Highland Ridge.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder, Deacon, taught Sunday School and was active in the Women’s group.  She also was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Marengo.  Edna passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 87 years.

 

She is survived by her children, Kathi (Jeff) Panknen of Urbandale and Brian (Kim) Sandberg of Oxford, Cindy (Norman) Slaymaker of Williamsburg; 6 grandchildren, Sean (Amanda) Panknen, Shanna (Tony) Ridgway, Jourdan (Gabriel) Harris, Jenny (Nate) Evans, Tyler Slaymaker; a step grandchild,  Corey (Crystal) Johnson; 8 great grandchildren and a brother, George Mattson of New Brighton, MN.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister Mary Ann Geving. 

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am on Monday, November 7, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg.  Burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for the First Presbyterian Church.  Messages and tributes may be directed to www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
