Edna Mae Scott, beloved aunt, friend, and Powell community icon, passed away peacefully at the age of 109 on October 9, 2025, at her home in Worland, Wyoming, surrounded by family.
Born on November 24, 1915, in Melstone, Montana, to John and Iris (Bradley) Harris, Edna grew up on a farm just outside of town. After graduating from high school in Melstone, she struck out on her own, working various jobs until she found herself in Bridger, Montana. There, in 1943, while working in a beauty salon, she met Walter Scott. The two were married and eventually made their home in Powell, Wyoming, where Walt joined the family plumbing business following his service in World War II.
Together, Edna and Walt shared a love for the outdoors, especially rock and fossil hunting. Their shared hobby led to an extensive collection-so vast and significant that Edna later donated to Rocky Mountain College. They also enjoyed square dancing, traveling across Wyoming to perform and judge competitions.
Known for her boundless energy, Edna walked up to five miles a day well into her 80s. She was a skilled gardener who planted as many as 1,000 gladiolas each year, and she delighted in crafts, especially creating handmade holiday decorations. A self-proclaimed jokester with a no-nonsense spirit, she never hesitated to speak her mind. Edna was also a proud co-founder and the "Mother" of the Homesteaders Museum in Powell, a legacy that lives on in her memory.
After 57 years in Powell, Edna moved to Laurel, Montana at age 85 and later to Worland to be closer to family. Yet, she always held a special place in her heart for Powell.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Scott, and her sister Phyllis Butts.
She is survived by her niece, Marlys Meuret of Billings, Montana; great-niece, Fawnette Greff of Worland; great-nephews, Thomas and Jim Meuret; great-great-niece, Michaella (Wesley) Clark; and great-great-great-niece Madeline. She also leaves behind many dear friends who cherished her quick wit, strong spirit, and unwavering kindness.
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in Edna's name to the Homesteaders Museum in Powell, Wyoming. Please send contributions to PO Box 54 Powell, Wyoming 82435.
