Edward L. Burk Jr. ObituaryEdward L. Burk, Jr., 91, of Airville, passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. He was the husband of the late M. Janet (Miller) Burk, who preceded him in death on September 8, 1997.
Born on September 16, 1933, in Lancaster County, Edward was the son of the late Edward L. Burk, Sr. and Lula E. (Drake) Burk. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. Following his military service, he dedicated 37 years of his professional life to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, where he retired in 1989 as a Directing Chief of the Department of Public Works. Edward was a devoted member of Pine Grove Presbyterian Church, where he served as a trustee and was secretary of the Pine Grove Cemetery Committee. He found great joy in spending time outdoors, whether it was hunting or going to the mountains. A lifelong baseball enthusiast, Edward was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family.
He is survived by his four children: Bryan E. Burk (Kandy); Mark E. Burk (Wendy); Daryl L. Burk (Debra); and Marcia A. Runkle (Michael). He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Jennifer Smith (Michael) and Cody Runkle (Kasey); two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Audrey Henry; his longtime companion, Betty Heffner; and his sisters-in-law, Lucy Miller and Donna Burk, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by his brothers, James Burk, Donald Burk, and Richard Burk, as well as his sister, Janet West.
A viewing for Edward will take place on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, beginning at 10:00 am at Pine Grove Presbyterian Church, 4263 Delta Road, Airville, PA 17302. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am, officiated by Rev. James Shuler. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery with full military rites offered by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Wagner-Elfner and Burg Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, is assisting the family with arrangements on behalf of Harkins Funeral Home.
The Burk family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff of Hospice and Community Care and the caregivers of Almost Heavenly Home Care for the compassion, grace, and care shown to Edward. Their kindness will be remembered always.
