Edward Earl “Cup” Durst, age 94, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and formerly of Yankton, South Dakota, died Monday, September 25, 2023, at Angelhaus in Yankton, South Dakota, surrounded by his family.

A memorial service will be 4:00 PM on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota, with Reverend Katie Ricke officiating.  Interment will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton, South Dakota at a later date.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service on Tuesday at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home.

Edward Earl “Cup” Durst was born January 1, 1929, near Fedora, South Dakota, to Harry and Alice (Lang) Durst Sr.  He grew up and attended school in Mitchell, South Dakota.  He then began working as a mechanic with his brothers at Durst Garage.  He married Beverly Jean Lee on March 17, 1950 in Mitchell, South Dakota.  They moved to Yankton, South Dakota in 1956 and Ed worked for Inter City Bus Line.  They then moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Ed worked as the shop foreman for Jackrabbit Bus Line.  After his retirement, he started working for Arborcare Tree and Shrub, which he continued until he completely retired at the age of 88.

Ed was a hardworking man.  A particular skill was his ability to diagnose engine problems over the phone.  This was a handy skill for many charter bus drivers and all four daughters, when they began to drive.  He took good care of things: his wife, his family, his home and his vehicles.  His expectations were high and he could be heard saying, “If you’re going to do it, do it right the first time” and “Don’t be afraid of hard work”.  He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing, visiting with friends and relatives, and hot fudge sundaes. Every grandchild was treated to his poached eggs on toast, while he fed them bites and commented on how beautiful they were.

He honored his wife above all, and this continued on when Beverly required nursing home care.  He was there before she opened her eyes in the morning and left after she closed them at night.  In his later years, he enjoyed trips to the casino with his daughters and the occasional scratch ticket was a welcomed treat.  He was a longtime member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include his four daughters: Diana (Jon) Gunderson of Mission Hill, South Dakota; Paula (Kamil) Yasat of Vermillion, South Dakota; Alicia (Dave) Cornemann of Yankton, South Dakota; and Brenda Kay Durst of Yankton; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; brother, Donald Durst of Cody, Wyoming and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beverly; two great grandchildren: Paige Gaukel and Rory Yasat; five brothers: Harry Jr., Ralph, Robert, Wilbur and Frank; and three sisters: Maureen Wagner, Dorothy Swenson and Ruth Toland.

Memorials may be directed to the Loads of Love or Care Casserole Ministry at First United Methodist Church, 207 W. 11th St. Yankton, SD  57078.
