Edward Lawrence Hughes

December 23, 1951 – July 25, 2025

Edward Lawrence Hughes, 73, of Keystone Heights, Florida, formerly of Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on July 25th, with his beloved wife Wendy (Nelson) Hughes by his side.

Born on December 23, 1951, in Providence, Rhode Island, Ed was the son of Edward and Helen Hughes. He grew up in Rhode Island alongside his sisters Debbie Ewing (Bobby) and Colleen Kraft (Kurt), and carried a deep love for his home state no matter how far his adventures took him.

Ed's life was deeply tied to the ocean. A lifelong fisherman, he built a remarkable career in both commercial and charter fishing, casting lines from Narragansett Bay to the distant waters of the Pacific. He was a pioneer in the world of fly fishing for big game and was featured in several magazines and television programs for his skill and fearless approach to the craft. Whether hauling gear or sharing stories at the dock, Ed brought a rare mix of grit, knowledge, and generosity to everything he did.

Nature wasn't just his work, it was his calling. In his later years, Ed turned to photography, capturing the quiet beauty of landscapes and wildlife with the same patience and reverence he brought to the sea. Around that time, he also served as the North Kingstown Harbormaster, continuing his lifelong bond with the ocean and its people. Whether he was studying the waters of the Bay or gazing across the horizon over Midway Island, his deep connection to the natural world never wavered.

Though he traveled the globe, Ed remained a true Rhode Islander at heart. He could make anyone laugh with a quick joke or an old fishing tale, keep you updated on the striper migration, or simply be there when you needed someone to talk to. He often said, "It's all good," and that's exactly what he was, all good.

Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy (Nelson) Hughes; his sons Matthew (Marissa), Michael (Jessica), and John Carozza (Amy Cimino); and his grandchildren Shea, Violet, Malia, and Mackenzie. He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters Debbie Ewing (Bobby) and Colleen Kraft (Kurt), extended family, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Helen Hughes.

Ed and Wendy Hughes, we will never forget your generosity as neighbors and friends. You treated our family like your own and we will never forget the biggest gift you gave, her name was Ellie. Thank you for always showing up and being there for us through the thick and thin. Ed, we know you´re somewhere free, casting a line, hooking the big rare fish and getting the best shots off with your camera.
We love you.

I met Ed at Huntington Beach State Park several years ago and he became a fixture there with his camera and that big Nikon lens. He was a really great guy and a wonderful photographer. Was always a nice day when we chatted about cameras and birds! Will miss you buddy!!

I met Ed on a photography trip. He was an exceptional human being and I am so glad we stayed in touch. I had gone to Mcneil and told him about it, and was thrilled when he won a pass to go. He found it as exciting as I did. He lived life to the fullest and I will dearly miss his amazing photography posts, knowing there will be no more. "One shot" Ed will be so sorrowfully missed, I am crying tears knowing the world is now without him. Sincere condolences to Wendy and his Children-he spoke of you with so much love.

I´m so sorry about Ed´s passing . He told me a story once where he was in full camouflage waiting for a Bobcat, and a squirrel stepped on his foot, and when he shooed it off and looked up a huge Buck was standing way to close for comfort.
He was a great friend and loved his family with everything he had.
My condolences
