Edward Gerhard Jahnke, a cherished family man, respected businessman, and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025, in Alpena, at the age of 90. Born on November 8, 1934, in Gross Montau, Germany, to the late Richard and Olga (Prang) Jahnke, Ed's life was a testament to the enduring spirit of hope and the American dream.
In 1952, Ed embarked on a journey that would shape the rest of his life, immigrating to the United States with his beloved family. His dedication to his new country was evident as he served honorably in the US Army, stationed back in Germany, where he utilized his unique position to bridge cultures. After his service, Ed returned to the United States and, on February 12, 1959, he married the love of his life, Elvira Host. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and the joy of raising their children, Monica (Jon) Jahnke-Broers and Arnold (Heidi) Jahnke.
Ed's entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as he owned and operated several local businesses, including Linda's Beauty Salon, the Ossineke Ace Hardware and Variety, and EJ Painting and Decorating. His work ethic and integrity were cornerstones of his success, earning him the respect and admiration of the community he served.
A man of many talents, Ed designed and built the family's first two homes, showcasing his skill and creativity. His passion for music was a source of joy for all who knew him, as he played several different instruments and lent his voice to the Besser Male Chorus. Ed's love for his heritage was evident as he hosted the Thunder Bay German American Club, celebrating and sharing his culture with others.
Ed's zest for life extended to the great outdoors, where he found solace and excitement in hunting and fishing. His commitment to service was unwavering, as he was an active member of several service clubs, including the Lions, Eagles, Elk, and Masons. His faith was a guiding force in his life, and he was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he found fellowship and community.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Elvira; his loving children, Monica (Jon) Jahnke-Broers and Arnold (Heidi) Jahnke; his sister, Brigitte Hinrichs; his sister in-law, Hildegard Jahnke; his cherished grandchildren, Shane Jaroch, Nicole Jahnke, and Ryan Jahnke; and his nephews, Norbert and Ralph Hinrichs. Ed was preceded in death by his brother, Siegried Jahnke; and his brother-in-law, Friedel Hinrichs.
His memory will be held dear in the hearts of those who knew him, and his influence will continue to be felt by the many lives he touched. Edward Gerhard Jahnke's story is one of resilience, hard work, and the pursuit of happiness, a narrative that will inspire generations to come.
A memorial service celebrating Ed's life will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at Grace Lutheran Church at 11am with Rev. Tom Orth officiating. There will be an hour of visitation beginning at 10am and a time for fellowship following the service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Grace Lutheran Church -Alpena.
