Wayne Diemond Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McWilliams Funeral Home - Alpena on Feb. 5, 2026.
Wayne Thompson Diemond, affectionately known as Tom to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, in Alpena where he was also born on September 28, 1934.

Tom was the cherished son of the late Walter and Jeanette (Thompson) Diemond. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Beverly Jean Haske, who preceded him in death on March 7, 2010. Together, they raised a loving family, including their children Jeff (Shirley) Diemond and Kimberly (Laine) Falk. Tom was a proud grandfather to Amanda Robinson, Maggie Palmer, and Caitlin (Steve) Wade. His life was also touched by the memories of his late siblings, Bill Diemond, Bob Diemond, and Sally Dingman, who predeceased him.

After graduating from Alpena High School in 1953, Tom's adventurous spirit led him to join the Navy, where he served his country with honor. His zest for life and entrepreneurial spirit were evident early on as he published newsletters and staked mining claims near the Flat Iron Mountains in Tucson, Arizona. Returning to Alpena, Tom followed in his father's footsteps, working in the quarry for HPC and National Gypsum, from which he retired in 1986.

Tom's business acumen was further showcased when he and Beverly owned and operated a hardware store in Rogers City in the late '50s and early '60s. Not one to settle into a quiet life, the couple later managed an OTR trucking business and Diemond Limo, becoming well-known sponsors of sports teams and entering the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame as a team and boosters. Tom and Bev also enjoyed spending their winters in Florida together.

A man of intellect and creativity, Tom was a self-taught musician, playing the guitar and harmonica with a passion that could light up any room. His natural artistic gift, which include caricatures, particularly in pen and ink, was admired by many. Tom's competitive spirit shone through in his days as a Golden Gloves boxer, and he continued to foster a love for sports by coaching, managing, and sponsoring softball and hockey teams. He also continued in his father's footsteps in becoming a Master Mason and a Shriner where he enjoyed fund raising and transporting children to the hospital.

In 1971, Tom started a card club that not only brought joy and camaraderie to its members but also became a cherished tradition that continues to this day. His literary legacy includes seven books, four of which he co-authored with his daughter Kim, sharing his life's adventures and wisdom with readers far and wide. Tom Diemond's life was a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and the joy of pursuing one's passions.

Per his wishes, Tom has been taken for cremation with a graveside service to be held at a later date. Memorial Donations can be made to the Alpena Shrine Club at 1020 US 23 N., Alpena, MI 49707. McWilliams Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
