John Welch Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McWilliams Funeral Home - Alpena on Jan. 31, 2026.
John "Bo" Baker Welch, a man of honor and kindness, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, in Alpena, Michigan, at the age of 85. Born on August 7, 1940, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, John was the cherished son of the late Mortimer and Bernice (Holtz) Welch. His life was a testament to the values of dedication, love, and service.

John's journey through life was marked by his unwavering commitment to his country and his family. After a distinguished career as a U.S. Navy Radioman, he continued to apply his skills and work ethic for 17 years as a shipfitter at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington where he was employee of the year in 2003. His dedication to his work was only surpassed by his devotion to his beloved wife of 46 years, Digna Villapando Welch, who stood by his side as a pillar of support and love.

Together, John and Digna raised a beautiful family, instilling in their children the values of integrity and compassion. He was a proud father to his daughter Cristy (Jeff), and his sons Carl and Rany (Dina). John's joy was multiplied by the laughter and love of his grandchildren, Alyssa, Angelica, Althea, and Abigail. His nieces Robie, Missy, and Meghan also held a special place in his heart, as did his cherished pets, Roxie and Smoke, who were his loyal companions.

John's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. He was an avid bowler, a skilled golfer, a patient hunter, and an enthusiastic fisherman. Each hobby provided him with not just recreation, but also avenues to form lasting friendships and share his knowledge and joy with others.

Those who knew John would describe him as the epitome of kindness. His gentle demeanor, warm smile, and willingness to lend a helping hand were his trademarks. John's legacy is one of love, service, and the simple acts of kindness that resonate in the hearts of those he touched.

John has been taken for cremation with a graveside service to be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery at a later date. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the VA Home Care nurses, Alpena Hospice, nurses, and nurses' aides at Medilodge of Alpena, Robin from Thunder Bay Transit Authority, and their neighbor and good friend, Annette Belaar. McWilliams Funeral Home has assisted the family.
