Obituary of Edward John Mach
March 1, 1938 – April 10, 2025
Edward John Mach of Bound Brook, NJ, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 10, 2025. He was 87 years old.
Born on March 1, 1938, in Omaha, Nebraska, Ed was the son of the late Clarence and Irene Mach. He spent his early years in Nebraska, where he was an exceptional gymnast. After graduating from Central High School in Omaha, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1956 to 1959. He was stationed at 29 Palms in California during his time in the service.
After his honorable discharge, Ed returned to Nebraska before relocating to New Jersey for work in 1967. It was there that he met the love of his life, Susan Havas. The two married in 1968 and spent the next 56 years side by side, partners in every sense of the word.
Ed held various positions as a warehouse supervisor before finishing his career working with Somerset County, where he served as a voting machine technician and supervisor until his retirement. His talents were widely respected and trusted.
Outside of work, Ed was a man of many interests. Family vacations to Lake George were a beloved tradition, and as a young man, summering in Minnesota sparked his lifelong love of fishing. He especially embraced fly fishing, often crafting his own lures. Ed was also an accomplished woodworker, bowler, and sports enthusiast. He especially enjoyed cheering on the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Ed had a great love for his cats and also enjoyed the birds that visited his backyard feeders. Over the years, he spent time gardening and beekeeping. Ed found happiness in life's small pleasures-like his daily Starbucks visits with Susan.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Susan Mach; his two sons, Peter Mach and his wife Karen, and John Mach and his wife Moira. He is also survived by his brother, Joe Mach, and his wife, Mary; his brothers-in-law, Jack and Peter Havas; and his sister-in-law, Joan Smith. He was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Irene Mach; his sister, Judy Hollis; and his brother, Leo Mach.
Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial gathering that will be held at the funeral home on Monday, April 14, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, NJ. Cremation services will be held privately.
