Edward Markiewicz Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Watson-Yates Funeral Home on Dec. 30, 2025.
Edward "Ed" Charles Markiewicz of Laurel, DE, passed away at the age of 93 on Saturday, December 27, 2025, with close family nearby.

Ed was born in Wilmington, DE, on March 23, 1932, the son of the late Henry and Teresa (Olenderski) Markiewicz. After graduating from Salesianum High School, Ed began his career in retail sales and later moved into television broadcast engineering and maintenance. His aptitude for electronics was leveraged when he joined the Air Force as a radar technician during the Korean conflict and German occupation. Upon successfully completing his term of service, he returned home and was fortunate to start a job with IBM in Wilmington, DE, as a card reader/tape drive technician. After numerous roles during his 34 years, he retired from IBM in 1990 as the Northeastern Region Software Sales & Service Director.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara L. Markiewicz, and soulmate of 63 years, 11 months, and one day, on January 10, 2021. As soulmates, they enjoyed traveling (planes, trains, ships) together to 13 countries and touring the USA, Dominican Republic, Europe, the British Isles, and Iceland. In their retirement years, you would find them dancing at the Millsboro American Legion Post 28, playing putt-putt, walking the boardwalk in Ocean City, MD, with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, or simply relaxing to a sunset on a bench at the marina. Their kindness was quietly shown in the simple way they cared for others, as they always departed people with the humble comment, "Hope you have a great life!" They will truly be missed.

Ed is survived by his children, Edward "Ed" Carl and his wife, Pamela A.; Eric Paul; and Michele Burke and her fiancé, Mike Voeltner; as well as 10 grandchildren (Ashlee C., Morgan R., Jacob, Jeff M., Erik M., Craig M., Adam M., Morgan B., Ethan B., Aron B.) and five great-grandchildren (Massey C., Declynn C., Grant M., Jack M., and Milez B.).

Honoring their wishes, surrounded by family, we will gather in private to gently release the intertwined ashes of Ed and Barbara together into the wind along the ocean-a final tribute to the deep and enduring bond they shared.

Please note that a Celebration of Life for Ed and Barbara is being planned for the near future and will be shared once details are finalized. To be included, please send an email to [email protected] or [email protected] for tracking and follow-up.

In lieu of flowers, monetary contributions may be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), PO Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
