Edward "Mac" McDowell of
Sterling, CT, born July 23rd, 1941, passed away at home with his beloved wife by his side on Friday, January 13th, 2023. Edward fought against his heart's failure courageously and fiercely until the end. Throughout the past month when his condition worsened, he maintained his sense of humor and lighthearted demeanor. Despite its physical deterioration, Mac's heart had an infinite capacity to love. This love was felt deeply by all those in his life.
Edward leaves behind his wife, Sally McDowell; son Miles McDowell; daughter Molly McDowell; son-in-law, Chris Griffin; and soon to be granddaughter. He is survived by his brothers, Donald McDowell of Bridgeport, and Michael McDowell and his wife Gabrielle of Bridgeport; three sisters, Ellouise McDonald of Stratford, Carol Lockshier of
St. Petersburg, FL, and Joanne Perkins of Uncasville. He has many special nieces and nephews, including Timothy Hidu and his wife Dale of Stratford. He had a loving relationship with his father-in-law, Rudolph Tobis of Trumbull and was blessed to have many cherished friends. Edward is predeceased by his father, Willard McDowell; mother, Lillian McDowell; and brothers, Willard McDowell, Jr., James McDowell, and Richard McDowell.
Edward was born in Bridgeport, CT and graduated from Bullard-Havens Technical School in 1960 with a specialization in carpentry. He was a proud United States Army Veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. Edward's career was as a mechanic in various forms. Most recently, he retired from Stratford Housing Authority after having worked at Carpenter Steel where he met his wife. When he moved to Sterling, Mac quickly set down roots by connecting with a local stone mason, Ric who ultimately became a treasured friend. He enjoyed a peaceful retirement. An average day included going out to breakfast with Sally or a friend, tuning in to the Price is Right, having a coffee and treat on the porch and as he would say, "puttering around". Edward spent his evenings with Sally rooting on his favorite teams (UCONN men and women's basketball, and the Boston Red Sox baseball) or bingewatching various shows. He was a favorite among the family's animals, especially Mia the greyhound, who viewed him as "Alpha".
Edward was a loving husband, doting father and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his first grandchild. He loved and appreciated all his family and friends. He understood the nature of his illness, however did not want others to worry or to have sad memories of him. The family will be hosting a private Celebration of Life on January 28, 2023. Please contact Sally for further information. Cremation services have been entrusted to the Dougherty Brothers Funeral Home and Crematory.
