Edward C. McSweeney, 93 of Whitman MA passed on 8/9/2025 at the West Roxbury VA Hospital after a valiant fight with kidney disease.
Ed was born in Weymouth on February 16, 1932, to the late Charles McSweeney and Lottie Churchill McSweeney. He was a graduate of Whitman High School, class of 1951.
Following high school, Ed decided to serve his country in the USAF and was deployed to Korea to work as a radio operator. After his deployment, he returned home to Whitman where he met his wife Margaret and raised three children. He was an active member of the Whitman VFW and American Legion. Ed served many roles for each organization as commander and district commander. Recently, Ed tried to resign as chairman of the board of directors but, his resignation was denied as they felt he still had more to contribute.
Ed worked as both an oil burner technician as well as a truck driver. After the passing of his wife Margaret Amorim McSweeney, he returned to oil burner repairs with Forni Brothers Oil until his retirement. However, retirement didn't quite stick and his love for driving won. He decided to return to the work force as a van driver for Grow, transporting people with disabilities. Later, he worked for McGee Toyota as a runner well into his eighties.
He was an avid camper driving his motor home until he was 90 years old especially to his favorite spot in Cape Cod, Bourne Scenic Park. His love of camping spread through multiple generations of his family.
Ed resided in Whitman with his late wife, Margaret Amorim McSweeney, who he was married to for 32 years. Together Ed and Margaret had three beautiful children: Michael E. McSweeney and wife Linda of Lake Havasu, AZ, Debra A. Johnston and husband George of Kingston, MA, Charles M. McSweeney and wife Stacey of Pembroke, MA. He was proudly known by his eleven grandkids and fifteen great grandchildren by the name of "Poopie." Ed also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
After the passing of Margaret, Ed found love again with Eunice Cady McSweeney. They were married for 33 years where there was an addition to his family of five stepchildren and their families.
The family would like to send their sincere thanks and gratitude to all the nurses, doctors and support staff at West Roxbury VA for his exceptional care.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, August 17th from 2:00-5:00pm at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel in Whitman. All are welcome to the funeral home at 9:45am on Monday, August 18th to join in procession before the funeral Mass. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am at the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman.
