Ed was born and raised on 43rd Avenue in San Francisco's Sunset District, the oldest child of Edward and Anna (McGinty) O'Brien. He never forgot his childhood amongst the Irish kids of the Sunset and always held close to the fond memories of his formative years in San Francisco. He was a proud graduate of Holy Name Grammar School, St. Joseph's Seminary and the University of San Francisco.
His early career in the US State Department and his love of the Spanish language led him to fulfill his wanderlust in places such as Cuba, Ecuador and Northern Spain. It was in Bilbao, Spain in 1960 where he me the Basque girl who he would eventually marry. They would go on to share a beautiful life over the next 61 years.
Ed was smitten with Bego from the first time he saw her and his feelings grew stronger over time. Soon after they were married, Ed left the State Department, and the young couple moved back to his beloved San Francisco where he began his career in banking. They welcomed their first child, Pablo, in 1964 and then a little girl, Nancy, in 1965. Monica was born in 1971 and completed their family. They moved from the Sunset District to sunny Walnut Creek in 1972.
He lived a long happy life, and reveled in good food, travel and fishing trips. He was so proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandson. He left a legacy through his beloved wife, Begona, his children Pablo (Suzanne), Nancy, and Monica (Damian) and his devoted grandsons, Josu (Christina), Brendan (Jennifer), Andrew, Sean, Nico, James, and Evan. The cherry on top of his adoring family was the arrival of his first great grandchild, Luca, in 2022. He is also survived by his siblings, Peter (Lori) O'Brien and Sister Melanie O'Brien, RSM.
Ed's memory will be a guiding star for all that knew him.
Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am at Christ the King Church, 199 Brandon Rd., Pleasant Hill, Ca 94523 on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. Please join the family for a lunch reception immediately following at Zio Fraedo, 611 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill, Ca, 94523.
