Edward Reed Obituary

Reed, Edward T.

October 15, 1937 - September 8, 2023

Ed Reed was born in Marion, Iowa. Married for 62 years, he is survived by his wife, Susan, and children, Justy Reed (Sara) and Jacqui Reed. Ed and Susan moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1961 where he began his career as a French teacher at Omaha North High School. In this role, he was respected for his dedication and ability to inspire his students to believe in the power of knowledge. In 1979, he became one of North High's Curriculum specialists and the magnet school's recruitment director. He also served as Assistant Athletic Director for North from 1982-1996, in addition to other leadership roles. Ed was a member of the Vikings of Distinction committee from 1983-2011 and was recognized and honored as a Viking of Distinction himself, in 2013. Outside of his career, he was an avid golfer until age 85, a voracious reader, and a well-known expert on The American Volunteer Group Flying Tigers. Ed Reed will be always remembered as an exceptional teacher, mentor and leader and will be missed forever by his family.

The Reed family will plan a celebration of Ed's life at a later date.

Mr. Reed was my French teacher from 1970-72. He made our classes about more than the language; lessons and French Club were rich with history and culture.

I was a student of Ed Reed's from 1964 thru 1967. I studied French under him, but beyond that, he was a role model for me, as my own father had died in 1962. I touched base with him now and again. I remember visiting him once at the Fontanelle golf course club house. "Monsieur Reed", as we always called him, made this world, and my life in particular, a better place. God bless his memory.

So sad to learn of Monsieur Reed's departure from our mortal realm. I loved his stories of his travels through France when he was a young man. We shared a passion for history, and I always knew he would call me out when that topic was broached during French class. He challenged his students at all levels and never allowed us to slack. After my military service, I decided to continue my study of French in college. Mr. Reed was so gracious in prepping me for that endeavor and provided a number of references and study materials. Madame Soukup and Dr Lafantant at UNO spoke highly of him and mentioned that his students seemed to be among the best prepared for college. Until we meet again Mr Reed, "Suivons!"

To Susan and the entire Reed family: Ed was a remarkable human being. I will always treasure my four years as one of his French students at North High. He left an indelible mark on the school and its graduates. Adieu, Monsieur Reed.

Mr. Reed was my French teacher for 4 years. Even though I struggled at times, he was encourager and he made learning fun. He continued to be a friend after graduation. I will always remember his smile and his laugh and I look forward to the day I see him again. Au revoir for now.

4 years of French at North High. One of the best teachers I ever had. Don't remember much French as I never used it again in life, but I remember Mr. Reed being disappointed in me when I gave half effort. And he was one of the few I didn't want to disappoint. Went on to serve my country in the Air Force, been married 45 years with 3 Grandkids. I am a better man because of my relationship with him.

I was very sorry to see Mr. Reed's obituary today. My mom, Mary Brown, taught with him at North High for many years. As a history teacher she appreciated his connection to the Flying Tigers. And as a colleague she knew he was a gifted teacher. Condolences to his family.

Ed Reed was my friend and Fraternity brother at Parsons College. Unfortunately we always had many miles separating us after college we always remained good friends for over 60 years. I truly respected his thoughts and through investigation on many issues. We didn´t always agree but respected each others thoughts. He will be truly missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with Susan and all the Reed family.
