Edward “Ed” Smith, age 83, of Deersville, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Trinity Medical Center, West in Steubenville.

Born August 24, 1942, in the family home near Deersville, he was a son of the late James Walter Smith and Mary Frances Fife Smith. Ed was a dozer operator for R&F Coal Company for many years and served for 28 years as a Stock Township trustee. He purchased a small farm outside Deersville in the mid-1970’s where he raised Hereford cattle and enjoyed baling hay. Ed put his talents as a carpenter to good use by building the house he lived in on the farm. More recently he enjoyed tending his flowers and watching the birds he fed. A member of the Faith and Fellowship Church in Deersville, he had been attended Freeport Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are brothers James Smith of Kilgore and John Smith of Hopedale; nephews and niece James “JR” Smith, Clay (Jennifer) Smith, Ross Smith and Erin (Mike) Smith; great nieces and nephews Cylene (Paden) Wood, Brooke Smith, Colby Smith, Austin Goodland and Josie Goodland, a great-great nephew Cyden Wood and great-great niece Paxton Wood.

He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law Jane Smith, a great nephew John Smith and a great niece Mackenzie Smith.

Honoring his wishes, there will be no services. Koch Funeral Home, Scio has been entrusted with his arrangements.
