Edward F. Welsh III (83) of Gates Mills, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home on February 24, 2025. His life was defined by a steadfast commitment to his work, family and his community.
Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Ed attended University School, Rollins College and Case Western Reserve University before he started his career in computer sales with IBM and later Avery Dennison and Symbol Technologies. Instead of retiring, Ed started a new career to fulfill his desire to help others. Ed became an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), serving with pride as a paramedic for Midwest Medical Transport and the Ellicottville, NY Fire Department. He loved providing care to those in need and was committed to his community.
Ed lived in and loved the Village of Gates Mills for 55 years. He was passionate about local governance and served on council for the Village of Gates Mills for 24 of those years. He worked hard to preserve the small-town atmosphere of the Village. Outside of his professional pursuits, Ed was a longtime member of the Kirtland Country Club, Chagrin Valley Hunt Club, served on The Friends of the Gates Mills Library and was active with Gates Mills Improvement Society. In his free time, he was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, a golfer, and a passionate skier. His grandsons called him Ski King because he thought Grandpa made him sound old. His adventurous spirit, unwavering energy and motivation kept him very busy.
Ed is preceded in death by his wife, Diane, and is survived by their two children, Allayne Proels (Sebastian), and Edward F. Welsh IV (Sara) and loving grandchildren Alexander "Alex" and Charles "Chaz" Proels and Edward F. "Teddy" Welsh V.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in his memory to The Gates Mills Land Conservancy, 7580 Old Mill Road, Gates Mills, OH 44040.
A committal service will be held at Knollwood Mausoleum, 1678 SOM Ctr Rd, Mayfield Heights, OH 44124, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2025, and friends are invited for a celebration of life following the service (12:00 to 3:00 p.m.) at The Burton Court in Gates Mills, 1501 Chagrin River Road, Gates Mills, Ohio.
