Edward Younger Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Greenville Memorial Home on Jan. 14, 2026.
Edward Lord Younger, Sr. was born on September 2nd, 1937 in Pitt County, North Carolina. Ed, as he was affectionately known, was a son of the late Alberta Dixon Younger and Theophus "Offie" Younger, Sr.

Ed grew up with his siblings in Ayden, NC and attended the Pitt County Schools. Ed enjoyed sports throughout his life; he played basketball in High School and his favorite teams to watch were the NY Jets (NFL) and the NY Mets (MLB).

At the age of 18 he met Vergia Galloway, who would become his bride in October 1955 in Greenville, NC. A year after they were married, they decided to join his sister Bertha Gillis Younger and move to Washington, DC where they resided for 18 months. Ed and Vergia's desired destination, however, was Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1958, with his father in-law James Galloway's assistance, Ed was able to obtain a job as a Truck Driver in Hoboken, NJ. After about 10 years in that position Ed decided to return to school and with Vergia, relocated to Jersey City, NJ.

It was in January 1964 when Ed decided to be baptized and join the Jehovah Witness Organization and began his door-to-door ministry. Ed was an Elder in the Kingdom Hall of Jersey City.

Ed loved his family and received the blessing of becoming a dad at the age of 45 when his only son, Edward J. Younger, Jr (EJ) was born in 1982.

Ed was a hardworking man, and he was able to secure a new job working for Robinson-Anton Textile company where he worked his way up the ladder and became the Plant Manager. Ed retired from this position in 2003 when the company relocated to Pennsylvania.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Theophus "Offie" Younger, Sr. and Alberta Dixon Younger, and three brothers, Theophus Younger Jr., Kenneth L. Younger and Collin L. Younger, Sr.

Ed leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife of 70 years, Vergia Galloway Younger; son Edward J. Younger, Jr., (Carmen Milagros Nieves); seven grandchildren, Edward Jalen, Brianna Ayshia, Ethan Juelz, and Edison James Younger, Christopher Nathaniel Grant, Kane Martin Young and Erin Justice Perez and one great grandchild, London Justice Feliz. He also leaves behind two sisters Bertha Gillis (Lawrence, deceased) of Washington, DC and Lula Alexander (Mark) of Mitchellville, MD, three sisters-in-law Teresita Beverage Younger (Collin, deceased) of San Antonio, TX, Shirley Ebron of Scotch Plains, NJ and Carolyn Famularo (John, deceased) of Browns Mills, NJ and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
