Edwin A. Applegate, 86
Edwin A. Applegate, 86, who was so loved by his family, died Friday, October 14, 2022 at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
He was born November 4, 1935 in Perrysville and was the son of the late Russell and Geneive (Guthrie) Applegate.
Edwin was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ashland.
Edwin was a United States Army veteran and retired from General Motors after 44 years. Starting in 1971, he was an active firefighter/EMT for 50 years with the Mifflin Community Volunteer Fire Department. He served as Fire Chief with the department from 1990 to 2010.
Edwin was a lifelong lover of sports. In 2012, he was inducted into the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1951 Perrysville High School six-man football team. He was an avid fan of both the Cleveland Guardians and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Edwin shared his love of sports with his children and spent many summers coaching baseball and softball youth teams.
Edwin is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara; children, Gregory Applegate, Cathy Applegate, and Sondra (Brad) Hays; a brother, Harold (Audrey) Applegate; grandchildren, Taylor (Alicia) Applegate, Madison Hays, Connor Applegate, and Brock Hays.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles and Donald.
An interment service will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the Zehner Cemetery with Reverend Kevin McClain presiding. The Ashland Veteran's Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
His family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mifflin Community Volunteer Fire Department (114 S. Ohio St., Ashland, Ohio, 44805).
