Ed Heuer was a gentle man and a gentleman. He passed peacefully on Sunday, July 20th surrounded by his loving family. This lifelong educator was born in Wild Rose, WI on April 22, 1931. Ed was a Boy Scout in Wild Rose, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout with Bronze and Gold Palms. He loved aviation and qualified for his private pilot's license at the age of 16. Ed earned his Bachelor's Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1953. There he met and married Mary Ann (Smith) Heuer on June 18,1955. Mary and Ed celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary just this past June in Port Edwards.
Ed served in the Wisconsin National Guard and the US Army from 1953 to 1955. As a teacher, Ed taught math in Racine and Janesville, WI for 11 years. He earned his Master's Degree in Education Administration from Northwestern University in 1960. He and his family; sons Marc and Kurt, and daughter Becky came to Port Edwards in 1968 where he became the elementary principal. Ed served in that leadership role with dedication and enthusiasm for 22 years.
After retirement in 1990, Ed continued working to support and improve local education, helping to found the Port Edwards Educational Foundation in 1995 and regularly reading to kindergarten classes every Friday afternoon. Ed Heuer was a positive catalyst for countless students, families, and teachers in Port Edwards, as well as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandparent and great-grandparent.
Ed and Mary have been members of Port Edwards United Methodist Church since 1968. They have both been faithful servants to that congregation; Ed served the church as Pastor Parish Relations Chair, Council of Ministries Chair and Sunday School Director. Ed and Mary are devoted to this church and generously offered up their time and tithes to support the work of the local church and beyond.
His lifelong hobbies included woodworking, photography, and biking. He could be seen daily riding the bike trails of Port Edwards well into his eighties, waving at everyone he passed by. Ed was a dedicated attendee of Sunrise Rotary Breakfast meetings and a Paul Harris Fellow in the Wisconsin Rapids Chapter of Rotary Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Herman Heuer Sr. and Marie Thompson Heuer. He has two surviving sisters; Marilyn Marie Sanford and Wendy Carolyn Caswell.
Ed's immediate family is "Mrs.Heuer-Honey" Mary Ann Heuer, his wife of 70 years, son Marc William Heuer (Holly Johnson Heuer), son Kurt David Heuer (Kim Habeck Heuer), and daughter Becky Heuer Smith (Michael David Smith).
Grandchildren include Justin Benjamin Heuer, Karli Ahna (Heuer) Tomsyck, Emery Pettis Heuer, Logan Rebecca Heuer, Orion Heuer Smith, and Ahren Heuer Smith.
Great-grandchildren include Harper Jo Heuer, Oliver Benjamin Heuer, Tilly Rainn Heuer, Gabriel Kenneth Smith, Jonah Benjamin Smith, Shiloh David Smith, Breck William Heuer, Micah Orion Smith, Levi Christopher Smith, Will Alexander Tomsyck, Joel Capri Smith, Crew Alexander Tomsyck, Elizabeth Lee Smith, Indigo James Heuer.
A Celebration of Ed Heuer's life will be held on July 29th at Port Edwards United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11am with the service at 11am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Port Edwards Education Foundation, Port Edwards United Methodist Church, or the YMCA of
Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
