Edwin Schmidt Obituary
May 24, 1950 - January 3, 2026
Edwin Henry "Scott" Schmidt III M.D., age 75, of Kirkwood, Missouri, passed away on January 3, 2026, at home with his family.
Scott was born on May 24, 1950, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of the late Edwin H. Jr. M.D. and the late Elizabeth Schmidt (nee Schmiemeier).
Beloved husband of 52 years to Mary (nee Buehler); loving father of Edwin IV (Anne), Matthias (Sophia), Paul (Colleen), and Sarah (Dan); cherished grandfather of Charlie, Cecilia, Viola, and Josephine; dear brother of Steve (Teresa), Jim (Karen), and Marty (Margaret); dear brother-in-law of Ann Willis (John), the late Paul Buehler, Mark Buehler (Suzy), and Barb McGauley (Pat). Dear cousin, uncle, great-uncle, and friend to many.
Scott graduated from Lutheran South High School in 1968, attended St. Louis University, and graduated from St. Louis University Medical School in 1975. After completing his residency in internal medicine, he practiced in the SSM Health system at St. Mary's Hospital and in Webster Groves until his retirement in May 2020. Dr. Schmidt was truly devoted to caring for his patients.
Scott delighted in playing and teaching piano and organ. As a teenager, he began playing for church and school activities and continued throughout his life, volunteering his musical talents with the choirs at St. Gerard Majella and St. Peter Catholic churches.
Following a fall while hiking on December 1, 2021, Scott sustained a spinal cord injury and lived his last four years as a quadriplegic. Despite the challenges of this time, he continued to pursue his love of reading, found joy making music in a new way by learning to play the harmonica with dear friends, and spent his time surrounded by the love of family and friends.
Scott has generously donated his body to St. Louis University Medical School.
Services: Visitation from 4-8 PM on Thursday, January 15 at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd., in Kirkwood, MO. Memorial Service at 11 AM on Friday, January 16 at St. Lucas United Church of Christ, 11735 Denny Rd., St. Louis, MO.
