Edwin "Eddie" Shie, age 90, of
Tomah, WI, passed away at Serenity House in Tomah on Wednesday March 19th, 2025. He was born on the family farm in Oakdale Township, Monroe County, on May 5, 1934, to Edmund and Mary (Betthauser) Shie.
Eddie began working on the family dairy farm while still in high school-a profession he loved. He eventually purchased the farm from his parents, continuing to milk cows and raise crops until his retirement 42 years later. He lived his entire life on the family farm, originally homesteaded by his great-grandfather in 1857.
In May 1969, he married Margaret "Marge" Zellmer, converting her from a "city girl" into a full-fledged farm girl.
Eddie looked forward to his annual getaway-his "vacation"-working the harvest at Grygleski's cranberry marsh, a tradition he continued for several decades, well into retirement.
He was deeply involved in his community, serving on the Oakdale Electric Coop Board of Directors for 33 years. He also contributed his time to the WECA Board of Directors, the NRECA Resolution Committee, and the Oakdale Credit Union Credit Committee for 32 years.
A lifelong member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, located just across from the farm, Eddie was dedicated to his faith. He served as the caretaker of the church cemetery for several decades and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
For over 50 years, Eddie was a faithful member of a monthly prayer group-a tight-knit circle of friends who gathered on the third Wednesday of each month. They shared stories, enjoyed a few beers, and played a friendly game of nickel-dime poker. They never raised the stakes, never talked politics, and remained friends until the end. He loved his family, friends, Ford trucks, John Deere tractors, the Green Bay Packers, the Brewers, Bucks, and Badgers.
Eddie is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Marge, his son Scott, daughter-in-law Sue, and grandson Justin (Nicole Cirrencione), as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. We'll miss him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosella "Rosie" and Ken Hoffman, Margaret "Muggs" and Howard Zastoupil, and Genevieve "Jenny" and Fran Gasper
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 24, 2025, 11:00 A.M. at the St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church Indian Creek, 18316 County Hwy N, Tomah. Father Peter Raj Mariasamy will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.
