Edwina Ann Miles Covington, 79 of Prospect, VA passed away on February 17, 2025. She was born on April 15, 1945 to the late Edward and Winnie Roley Miles. She was raised in Exmore, VA on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She attended Longwood College where she met the love of her life Julian Covington. He was a farmer and drove a taxi in Farmville. On the farm they raised tobacco, hand milked dairy cows, had a small herd of beef cattle, a few pigs and seasonal vegetables. Edwina taught high school French and English for many years and retired from Appomattox Public School.
Edwina also was a local correspondent for the Farmville Herald with columns about the goings on in the Elam-Prospect area. Her biggest passion was local history, she was active in both the Prospect Historical Society and the Farmville, Prince Edward historical society. Her knowledge of the rural history of the area was unsurpassed and she often shared stories about the “old days”.
She was a member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed trips to revisit her home place on the Eastern Shore and was active in her high school reunions. She was an avid reader and took up painting and art with the encouragement from Audrey Sullivan and the Red Door 104 Art Studio in Farmville. Her cats Hilda and Georgie and her border collie Prince were her constant companions. She is survived by her niece Joette Barr Finchum (James).
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025 at 11:00AM in the Olive Branch Church with interment in the church cemetery.
