Eleanor Cooke Chambers died peacefully on June 6th, 2024, at her home at the age of 92.

SERVICES:  Graveside services will be Saturday June the 8, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at Cairo Cemetery near Alamo, TN with Mr. Glen Pendergrass and Mr. Jim Pentecost officiating.

Eleanor was born on July 29th, 1931, to Earl and Annie Cooke of Alamo. She was the youngest of three children.

Eleanor graduated from Alamo High School and worked at Ronk Five and Dime until she married Albert Young Chambers of Tigrett, TN. They were married for over 50 years before his passing in 2005.

They had one son, Dr Larry Cooke Chambers (Mona) of Jackson, TN; three grandchildren, Kristen Elizabeth Chambers of Jackson, Lauren Chambers Hunt (David) of Murfreesboro, and Dr Hanlan Cooke Chambers of Jackson, and one great grandchild, Harrison Cooke Hunt of Murfreesboro.

She leaves a special niece, Charlotte Cooke Lowe of Alamo, whom she adored. She also leaves a special friend and caregiver, Olivia Lacy, who showed her much love in her later years.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert and two brothers, Denton Cooke and James Cooke.

Eleanor was a devoted wife and homemaker. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and watching the Tennessee Vols. She loved watching Gunsmoke and knew every episode by heart. Eleanor was a long-time member of Skyline Church of Christ in Jackson.

She was an avid volunteer especially heading up campaigns for the local American Cancer Society. She also served as a commissioner on the Jackson Housing Authority.

Eleanor enjoyed politics and served as the local campaign office manager for longtime Congressman Ed Jones and other candidates.

After Larry began high school, she resumed her career by working part time in the private law firms of Jim Diamond and Judge Joe Morris.  After that, Eleanor worked as a planner for the first Tennessee Commission on The Status of Women.

Eleanor then worked in the ladies' fashion at Kisber's and Sisters Boutique for several years. She followed her dream and became a part owner and buyer for Suzy's Boutique, a local fashion shop in Jackson. Eleanor also had a flare for interior design and helped many of her friends with their home decor.

She started her own business, Closets by Eleanor, that was one of the first closet organizing businesses in Tennessee.

After retiring, Eleanor tirelessly took care of Albert for more than ten years during his cancer treatment and remission.

Loved by all her family, she was especially brought joy by visits from her grandchildren and great grandson, Harrison!

The family has requested that any memorials would be made to Skyline Church of Christ Building Fund, 1024 Skyline Drive, Jackson, TN 38301 or St Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or online at www.stjude.org.
