Eleanor C. Eckles

Eleanor Catherine (McHugh) Eckles affectionately celebrated by all those dear to her as 99 years old, entered eternal life on Sunday, October 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 1, 1926, in Rennerdale, Pennsylvania, Eleanor was quick to round up her age in recent years, delighting in her near-century of life at 98 years and 10 months. Eleanor was the cherished daughter of John Daniel and Jane Ann (McDade) McHugh and grew up alongside her three brothers, Jack, Hugh and Dennis.

On July 29, 1944, Eleanor married the love of her life, Raymond T. Eckles. Their deep bond, founded on love and resilience, faced its first great test when Raymond left to serve overseas in Germany during World War II. Separated by oceans and uncertainty, they stayed close through letters filled with warmth, encouragement, and unwavering support. These letters became a lifeline, carrying them through the challenges of distance and hardship, and cementing a love that would see them through a lifetime. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised a spirited family.

Eleanor was a devoted mother to her “rambunctious crew,” nurturing them with unconditional love and, as her children would agree, the best cooking ever. After the family settled in Indianapolis, Indiana, Eleanor took her culinary talents to the schools, ultimately leading the cafeteria at Southport Middle School. Known for her advocacy and high standards for nutrition, she was ahead of her time in considering food allergies and ensuring every child felt included at her tables. Eleanor’s influence reached across Indianapolis public schools as she worked with the district’s food services association, aiming to make a difference in students’ lives citywide.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raymond, in 1981, after 37 years of devoted marriage. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Judith, who died in infancy, and her sons Raymond Jr. (Judy) and Daniel (Carol). These losses weighed heavily on her heart, but she remained steadfastly connected to their memories.

She is survived by her children Paul (Keitha), Dennis (Bonnie), Terry (Theresa), John (Linda), and Laurel (Bernie) Roberts; her 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren, along with a close-knit extended family of cousins. Eleanor’s legacy lives on in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She worked hard to create special memories with each of them, never missing a birthday call, celebrating the "big moments" as much as she could, and sharing (sometimes lengthy) stories of their parents when they were children. She took immense pride in her family and was always thrilled to share with anyone who would listen just how amazing each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were.

Eleanor was known for her fierce loyalty and her belief in equal rights, speaking out for those who weren’t treated fairly and standing for justice in her quiet, powerful way. She also participated in a pen pal partnership with a local elementary school, writing long letters about life during the Great Depression and World War II. She cherished the children and enjoyed the opportunity to educate them on the historic times she lived through.

The many family dinners she lovingly prepared remain treasured memories, filled with the warmth of her presence and the strength of her care, in spite of the silverware sometimes being cold, and her "the women cook, the men clean up" policy. Beloved “Ms. Ellie” will be remembered for her enormous heart, her unwavering love, and the powerful example she set.

Eleanor’s life will be celebrated on Thursday, October 31, 2024, at St. Barnabas Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Services will begin with a rosary at 9:45 a.m., followed by calling hours from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., with a Mass to immediately follow. A graveside service and family eulogy will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

As Raymond would often sign his letters, “Always I Love You, Forever I’m Yours,” Eleanor’s family takes comfort knowing she and her beloved Raymond are reunited at last.
