On October 30, 2024, Eleuterio Lagunez Martinez of Nyssa, Oregon, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. Eleuterio was born to Catalina Martinez and Severo Lagunez on October 6, 1941.
Eleuterio was on his own from the age of 13. Within the next two years of his life, he made lifelong friends while making his way to Nyssa, Oregon where he met the love of his life, and settled to create his new life. Eleuterio was in a car accident, and while recovering in the Nyssa Hospital, he passed the room of the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, Armandina Ramos, who was also recovering from an auto accident. He fell in love with her instantly, and after running into her a year later, courted her until she finally agreed to marry him.
During this time, Eleuterio and Armandina were settled in Nyssa, while traveling from Texas to Montana to Oregon working to support themselves. They started their family with their first son Roberto, followed by Diana, Jaime, and Rosaimelda, and finally Eluterio Jr. Nothing was more important to Eleuterio than his family and providing for them.
Eventually, Eleuterio was hired at the Amalgamated Sugar Factory in Nyssa, where he worked for 35 plus years, then retired and returned to work there several times. Eleuterio was a hard worker, and never sat still. He made many friends here and was known by coworkers as Louie. A hard work ethic was something he was proud of and passed on to his children and grandchildren. After saying he loved you, the next question out of his mouth when anyone came to visit was, "did you work today?"
Besides work and spending time with friends and family, Eleuterio was an avid gardener, and loved nothing more than making his yard beautiful for his wife and family. His pride and joy was his fishpond in his backyard that he built himself. He would spend hours with the grandchildren just feeding and watching the fish. Nothing brought him more joy than having his yard filled with family just being together.
The education of his children and his grandchildren were very important to Eleuterio. Nothing made him prouder than the educational achievements of his children and watching them play high school sports.
Eleuterio will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. No matter where Eleuterio went, and no matter the language barrier, he welcomed everyone and never met a stranger. You knew you had a special place in his heart if he called out to you, "Hey, I love you, ugly people!"
He is survived by his beloved wife, Armandina Martinez, his children, Roberto (Kathie) Martinez of Hermiston, Diana (Walter) Mata of Nyssa, Jaime (Jolisa) Martinez of Ontario, Rosaimelda Martinez of Nyssa, and Eluterio Jr. (Theresa) Martinez of Ontario. As well as his grandchildren Joshua (Teresa) Martinez, Jordan (Brianna) Martinez, Nicholas (Lindsey) Mata, Robert James (Bree) Mata, Rigo (Joslyn), Jeremiah and Isaiah Mata, Ezra Martinez, Maya Guadalupe (Audon) Martinez, Alana and Andre Martinez, Nathan (KayleyAnn) and Shelby Swearengin, Rose and Jadzia Cleaver, Taelyr, Elijah, and Madeline Martinez and 13 great grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held at Lienkaemper Funeral Chapel, November 15, 2024, at 11:00 am.
