Worcester-Elizabeth A. (Schonborg) Etre, 73, passed away Sunday, February 23 in St. Vincent Hospital.
She leaves her husband of 53 years, Albert P. (Paul) Etre, Jr; two sons, Andrew P. Etre and his wife, Kimberly of Worcester, Albert P. (Trae) Etre III and his wife, Heidi of Fairfield, CT; three grandchildren, Sophie, Ryan, and Sadie Etre; three brothers, David G. Schonborg and his wife, Sherry of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Lee B. Schonborg and his wife, Charron of Shrewsbury, and Douglas M. Ostlund of Lake Forest Park, WA, several sisters and brothers in-law, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She is pre-deceased by two sisters, Linda J. McDaniel, and Rebecca J. Ostlund. She was born in Worcester, daughter of George R. Schonborg and Elizabeth J. (Patterson) Schonborg-Ostlund. She lived most of her young life along the shores of Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury and later moved to Northborough and attended Algonquin High School.
Liz worked for Saint John’s High School, her home away from home for 38 years, before retiring in 2016. There she made lifelong bonds with many faculty and staff members. Her happy place was any beach where she could plop her chair in the sand while hunting for the perfect seashell or sand dollar. She cherished trips with family to the beaches of Maine, Cape Cod, Rhode Island, and Florida. When Liz wasn’t enjoying time on the beach, she was “relaxing” by cooking, cleaning, ironing, gardening, doing cross-stitch or knitting, or enjoying a game of Words with Friends on her iPad with her favorite furry friend on her lap. Grammy’s kitchen was a famous gathering place for family and friends, where they could enjoy a glass of wine, some laughs, and a slice of her homemade apple pie. Auntie Lizzy was very popular with her nieces and nephews, who never left with an empty stomach after dropping by unannounced, or without having their trick-or-treat bags overflowing with candy at Halloween. Quite simply, Liz’s happiness came from making those around her happy.
Visiting Hours are Saturday, March 1 from 9 to 11am at Callahan Fay Caswell Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30am in St. Anne’s Church, 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary Health Care Center, 39 Queen St., Worcester, 01610.
