Life Reflections

After a lengthily illness, a beautiful life came to a close. On Monday December 15, 2025 Mrs. Elizabeth Charnetta Gabriel (AKA) Liza Mae, of Hope Mills, NC departed this life at Wood Haven Retirement Home in Lumberton, North Carolina. She was born on August 30, 1947 at Southeastern Hospital in Lumberton, North Carolina. Her parents were Duncan Lee McKay and Viola Flowers McKay. She was reared and educated in Fairmont, North Carolina. Elizabeth graduated from Rosenwald High School with the class of 1966.

After graduation she moved to Jamaica Queens, New York where she was employed with TIAA CRE Financial. Her position there was a claims adjuster in the Insurance Section of the Firm. Liza Mae was a valued employee there for 35 plus years. Upon retiring she moved to Charlotte North Carolina where she remained for 14 years. Longing to be closer to her immediate family in Fairmont she moved to Hope Mills. There she enjoyed shopping as most lady's do, entertaining, playing Bid-Wiz and spending valued time with family and friends. After doing a thorough cleaning to her home, which she did often, she loved to relax and just chill. Those of you who know her best know that she was the life of the party. When she entered a room, always immaculately dressed and well groomed, everybody took notice.

Liza, although she was not anyone's birth mother, she was the mother figure to her siblings after their parents passed away, and many of her nieces and nephews also. They valued her advice and guidance.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred Gabriel, her brothers Riley Hines and James McKay; sisters; Altha Bell Cook, and Gloria Etta Smith.

Mrs. Elizabeth McKay Gabriel is survived by one brother Duncan McKay of Parkton, NC ; three sisters Phyllis Wily of New Jersey, Gladys Moody (Sherman) of Fairmont, NC, Vanessa McKay of Albany, New York. one sister-in-law Francis McKay of Hollis, New York, many nieces, and nephews; great nephews and nieces and a host of cousins, and other relatives and friends.
