Elizabeth Gibson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by St. John's Family Funeral Home & Crematory on Jan. 14, 2026.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Sewell "Tibbie" Gibson, a beloved wife, friend, and community leader, who left us peacefully on January 6, 2026, at the age of 101. Born on October 13, 1924, in Fort Pierce, Florida, Elizabeth embodied the spirit of determination and compassion throughout her remarkable life.

She attended Florida State University and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. She furthered her academic journey working on a Master's Degree at the the University of Houston. Her entrepreneurial spirit flourished in the competitive world of real estate, where she successfully invested in properties in McLean, Virginia, for over a decade.

In 1976, Elizabeth relocated to St. Augustine with her beloved husband, Retired Navy Captain Freal Justus Gibson. Together, they sought to create their dream home in Crescent Beach, a vision tragically altered by her husband's unexpected passing. Yet Elizabeth persevered, channeling her energy into serving her community and making a difference.

An active political voice, Elizabeth dedicated eight years to the role of Representative State Committeewoman. She played a pivotal role as a charter member and the first President of the St. Johns County Republican Women's Club, paving the way for future generations of women in leadership. Her commitment to education was evident in her membership with the American Association of University Women, and she was active in the Retired Officers Association.

Elizabeth's legacy is one of resilience, service, and unwavering dedication to her community. Her kind spirit and insightful wisdom touched the lives of many, and her imprint will be felt for years to come.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Rubye Sewell and her husband Captain Freal Justus Gibson (US Navy Retired). She is survived by her best friend, Mary Fuller (106 yrs old), her good friend and personal representative, Patty Brundick; Tara, Chris, Joseph, and David West, and her nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth will be laid to rest next to her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. Anyone interested in the details of the service at Arlington, please contact the family at [email protected].
