EMPORIA, VA - Arrie Cheely Harlan, lovingly known to all as Betsy, entered into eternal rest on October 21, 2025, in Midlothian, Virginia, at the age of 73. Born on September 16, 1952, in Lawrenceville, Virginia, Betsy lived a life filled with love, service, and devotion to her family, friends, and faith.
Betsy began her professional journey at a Richmond law firm, where she played a pivotal role in handling real estate transactions. Notably, she contributed to the land acquisitions for I-95 and was instrumental in the development of Davis Truck Stop in Stony Creek, Virginia. Her career reflected her dedication and skill in navigating complex transactions.
In pursuit of further growth, Betsy attended Liberty University, earning a bachelor's degree in Christian leadership followed by a master's degree in Apologetics. Her education was a testament to her unwavering faith and commitment to understanding and sharing the teachings of Christ.
Betsy had a passion for crocheting, blessing many members of the family with her handmade blankets. She was also an exceptional cook and baker, delighting loved ones with her culinary creations. Her garden flourished with canna lilies, which held special significance as she carried one on her wedding day to Max, her beloved husband of four years and five months. Together, they cherished moments spent watching hummingbirds and songbirds, surrounded by the fragrance of gardenias.
A devoted member of Destination Church – Crossings Campus in Prince George, Virginia, Betsy and Max served as greeters on the Guest Experience Team, welcoming others with warmth and kindness. Her faith was her guiding light, and Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me," provided comfort in her final days.
Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, Elenore Anne Link Suir and William Guy Cheely, and her brother, James Arnold Cheely. She is survived by her brother, Rodney "Chip" Cheely, and his wife Brenda; her sister, Pam Cheely Koepke, and her husband Steve; and her nephews, Ryan and Aaron Cheely. Her extended family and friends will dearly miss her presence and spirit.
A memorial service will be held at Destination Church at a later date to celebrate Betsy's life and legacy. Due to Betsy's sudden passing, contributions can be made to assist with expenses by clicking here.
Betsy's gentle spirit and boundless love have left a lasting imprint on all who were blessed to know her. May she rest in peace, embraced by the Lord she so faithfully served.
