RICH SQUARE, NC - Barbara Harrell Baker, 83, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025, at her home with her loving family by her side. Born on June 2, 1942, she lived a life full of love, devotion, and service.
From an early age, Barbara embraced the values of hard work and dedication. She married the love of her life, JG Baker, on July 23, 1959. Together, they shared an incredible journey of 66 years, filled with love, joy, and countless cherished memories. Barbara immersed herself in farm life, relishing every moment. Barbara could disk fields, chop peanuts, pick peanuts, or run the boll buggy during harvest, and help JG with the cows, all while nurturing a home overflowing with warmth and hospitality. It was not unusual for her to work in the fields in the morning and then go home and prepare a hearty lunch for her family and the workers on the farm. Everyone was always welcome at Barbara's table; her generosity knew no bounds. Barbara found peace while mowing grass and working with her various flowers – Angel Wing Begonias being one of her favorites. Her passion for the farm was matched only by her devotion to her family, whom she adored above all else.
Known for her vibrant spirit and unwavering kindness, Barbara never spoke ill of anyone and was adored by all who knew her. Her faith and commitment to others were evident in every aspect of her life. Barbara loved the Lord and was a founding member of Grace Baptist Church, where she remained active for many years, until her health no longer allowed it. She served in many areas of the church; as a Sunday School teacher, as well as helped with Vacation Bible School, and was always ready to help with meals and any church-related events. She loved her community and served as president of the Roxobel Community Club, where her culinary talents were well-known. She would often cook chili or soup for fundraisers and then buy a bowl herself to support the cause. Her legacy as "the Best Mama, Miss Barbara, and Aunt Barbara ever" is fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Gertrude and Edgar Harrell; her parents-in-law, Joe and Myrtle Baker; her siblings, Sallie Parker and husband JC, Rachel Martin and husband Joe, and Calvin Harrell; and brothers-in-law, Fraiser Helms and Jackie Bryant.
Barbara leaves behind a legacy of love through her surviving family: her devoted husband, JG Baker; her children, Pam Baker-Ellis, Jeffrey Baker and wife Renee, Lisa Baker Williford and husband "Slim" Richard, and Jennifer Baker. She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Jake Ellis and wife Carol Lynn, Jessica Ellis, Luke Baker, Gracie Baker, Meagan Williford, Brooks Ann Ard and husband AJ, and Justin Williford and wife Jessie; and her great-grandchildren, Jace Ellis, Westin Ellis, Whitley Ellis, Colt Ard, Mason Ard, Josie Williford, Charlie Williford, and Donovan Davis, expected in January 2026, who will carry forward her example of love, kindness, and compassion. Also left to cherish her memory are her sisters, Paige Bryant and Thelma Helms; and brothers Kenneth Harrell, Ronnie Harrell and wife Canara.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Liberty Home Care and Hospice for the exceptional care they provided for Barbara and the encouragement to the family during the last few months.
