Elizabeth Langford Young Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Miller Funeral Services - Houston on Feb. 26, 2023.
Elizabeth Anne Langford Young was born in McCook, Nebraska on 16 December 1950 to Thomas Ray and Mae Wynelle Langford. Mom was a nurse and Dad a civil engineer. Second among five children, Anne grew up in Houston surrounded by a raucous, loving family. Daily life revolved around family, school, church, girl scouts, camping, dance lessons, and the Jesse H. Jones Commodores Drill Team. Family vacations cultivated ties with both sets of grandparents.
She entered Texas Women's University graduating with a Bachelors' degree in Nursing in 1973. That same year, Anne married the love of her life, Robert Weldon Young. Along with Bob, Anne built deep ties with her siblings, friends, co-workers, and students. Home included a panoply of pets: ducks, bunnies, cockatiels, and a very good bird named Houdini. Anne loved travel and shared adventures in Ireland, Vienna, Montreal, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Orcas Island, and the Texas Hill Country. A lifelong Presbyterian, Anne was an ordained Elder, sang in the choir, rang handbells, taught Sunday School, led the Senior High youth group, and served the local Presbytery.
Anne began her career as an Emergency Room nurse. She would go on to earn Masters' and Doctoral degrees with a focus in Nursing and Education. Joining the TWU faculty, she taught clinical nursing to undergraduates. Anne fell in love with teaching. During her 42-year tenure at TWU, she served ten years as Doctoral Coordinator growing the program to national prominence. She was a fierce advocate for her students, serving as chair or committee member on more than 130 dissertations. A consummate professional, she was a well-recognized nursing educator, was widely published, and received numerous awards for her contributions in the field. She retired as Professor Emerita of the College of Nursing at Texas Woman's University in 2019. Her contributions will live on through her colleagues and former students.
Anne bravely fought an eight-year battle with Carcinoid syndrome until her death on 20 February 2023. She was deeply loved and admired and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Bob Young; her sisters Rae and Martha Langford; sister-in-law Pam Morgan; brothers Tom and Bill Langford; and two nieces, a nephew, and their children.
The family's deepest gratitude goes out to those who sat with Anne in her final days and to the M.D. Anderson staff. Memorial contributions may be directed to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Services for Anne will take place at 2:00pm on 3 March 2023 at Christchurch Presbyterian, 5001 Bellaire Boulevard, Houston TX.

Anne was so wonderful to volunteer to teach me what to do as a chair for a dissertation committee for a PhD student. I could not have done it without her guidance. She was always with a smile, a word of encouragement, and suggestions of how to do it differently than I had planned. She is a great loss to all of us and will be missed.

In my darkness moments in school. God sent an Angel with the clearest blue eye to guide me with assistance to the finish line. And she and her sister Rae were my heroes friends and angels forever. Now she's looking out for all of us that is what she dose.

In 1994, I was deep into the dissertation process when the vendor, whose new product my research depended upon, announced a delay in a critical release date. I could not proceed. I had to come up with a new plan quickly. Anne Young and Rebecca Krepper stepped up to support me through one of the most stressful times in my life, and I completed my dissertation on time. I remember Dr. Young as a kind, understanding, and brilliant woman who went the extra mile for her students. I know; I was one of them, and I am forever grateful.

Dr. Young was a very sweet lady, with a gentle smile. I enjoyed talking with her during the time I worked at TWU. I was deeply sadden after hearing of her passing. My prayers goes out to the family.

Anne was indeed a very special person. She was a wonderful colleague at TWU, from whom many of us sought counsel and advice. I never met anyone who had the calm demeanor, conveying the sense that "all will be well," during times of stress to the extent Anne did. She was thoughtful, consistently stood for high standards, exercised humanity and humility in all she did and said, and was a clear driver in making TWU an excellent work environment. Gone from the physical world, but never forgotten. My deepest condolences to all who knew Anne, but especially to Jim, who likely awakens every day wondering where the other pea in his pod is. Dr. Young was one of my all time favorite professors at TWU as I went through the NE program. Her creativity and gentle guidance will continue to be an inspiration, as I now teach at TWU.
