Elizabeth Marie Baker Spooner began a quiet, simple life on February 12, 1938, in Flint, Michigan, with her parents-Audrey Lou Baker and William Wesley Baker, and her older siblings-Jimmy Gene Baker, and Millie Ann Baker. She cherished childhood memories of playing with the neighbor kids, spending time with her grandparents in Alabama, her pet deer, and going fishing with her father.
She attended Utley High School, and married Claude "Donnie" Spooner on May 15, 1954. They were the "Original Donnie and Marie", and remained so for over 71 years, raising four children along the way: Teri Wielgorecki (Michael), Toni Stutz, Teddi Spooner, and Don Spooner (Charlotte).
She was a diligent and faithful worker: Raising babies, homemaking, leading Girl Scouts, attending her children's concerts, sports events, and music lessons. Serving alongside her husband in her church and other ministries as an accomplished piano player and choir leader. Growing roses, gardening, canning. Baking cakes: wedding cakes, birthday cakes, graduation cakes, all kinds of cakes, as well as her famous chocolate chip cookies. Spending her evenings creating beautiful, intricate embroidery and other needlework, and her summer afternoons watching the Detroit Tigers. Hiding her chocolate from us kids.
After her children were grown, she worked as a medical assistant in Flint for over 20 years. Soon after retiring, she moved to Henderson, Nevada with Dad in 1995, and then began working part time as an office assistant for 18 years at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
When she became a great-grandmother, she acquired the name of "Gigi", to tell her apart from all of the other grandmas. She was a wonderful grandmother, and she was also a Gigi to all her knew her and worked with her. She made everyone feel special, and had a knack for letting people open up to her and receive her encouragement. She loved babies and little children, often whispering "secrets" in gibberish into their ears to be silly. She still hid her chocolate. She hated cilantro as much as she loved chocolate.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, and our dear sister Toni.
She completed her quiet, simple life on September 18, 2025 at home with her husband and family by her side. She is survived by her husband and remaining children, and a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews affectionately called her Aunt Marie, and she was especially blessed with her close relationship with her sister-in-law, Lois Spooner Lobbs, who will miss her dearly.
As Alzheimer's stole her identity and her life, she often said she wanted to go home. And so she will. A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on October 4, 2025 at Flint Memorial Cemetery, 9506 N. Dort Hwy, Mt Morris, MI 48458
She lived a quiet, simple, faithful life, focused on the only things that really mattered: Faith, Home and Love. We, and the world, would do well to follow in her footsteps.
